TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP
RESPONSIVENESS IS THE HIGHEST FORM OF RESPONSIBILITY I’ve had the privilege of coaching legends. Olympians. Millionaires and billionaires. Celebrities. TV personalities. Individuals operating at the summit of their industries, where there are barely any levels left to ascend. I have studied them. Written about them. Spoken about them. Delivered thousands of lectures across more than 400 cities in 40 nations worldwide. And through all of that exposure, people still ask me: what is the number one trait in high-level leadership? Yes, humility matters. Integrity matters. Strategy matters. Mental discipline, philosophy, psychology, passion, principles — all of them matter. But the one trait I consistently see missing — in those still searching for themselves and in those just one or two steps from their breakthrough — is responsiveness. Responsiveness. In Welcome to Greatness, I say the highest form of responsiveness is the highest form of responsibility. You cannot claim responsibility if you are not responsive. Responsibility without responsiveness is branding. It is performance. It is words without weight. When George Floyd died, the world responded. Corporations issued statements. Leaders spoke. Streets filled with protestors. Books were purchased. Commitments were announced. For a moment, the world appeared awakened. But responsiveness is not a moment. It is a movement. And movements require maintenance. Many spoke up, but few sustained the work. Many pledged change, but did not embed change into systems, policies, hiring, budgets, culture. That is the difference between reaction and responsiveness. Responsiveness is not talk. It is talk matched with action. Consistent action. Massive action. It is the discipline to keep showing up long after the hashtags fade and the cameras disappear. It is the willingness to align your calendar, your capital, your energy, and your influence with what you claim to value. Are you responsive to your dream, or do you merely admire it? Are you responsive to your purpose, or do you postpone it? Are you responsive to your family, your community, the issues shaping your nation and the global shifts redefining our future? Or are you simply informed but inactive?
