What do you always do first?
Before touching any tool or workflow, whatโ€™s your very first step when creating an automation?

Love your process! ๐Ÿ™Œ Quick side question ๐Ÿ˜ โ€” do you think Gemini is better suited for automation-related projects compared to ChatGPT, or does it depend on the use case? Chiming in with my process as well: I always start by creating a tree diagram of the problem before building any automation. This helps me break the idea down, narrow the scope, and identify small, standalone automation components that can be reused across different workflows. It keeps things modular and much easier to scale later on.

Self Hosted N8N locally vs using self hosting platform
What are the key differences between running n8n locally (self-hosted) versus using a managed hosting platform, and which option is better for beginners? Iโ€™m currently running n8n locally using Docker. Iโ€™m considering moving to a hosting platform like Render or Replit, but so far it feels very similar. The main difference I see is that with a hosted setup, n8n is always on and I donโ€™t need to keep my machine running. For those whoโ€™ve tried both, what other differences should beginners be aware ofโ€”especially around reliability, cost, maintenance, and scaling?

@Tanner Woodrum Thanks for clarifying the difference! Iโ€™m pretty new to self-hosting, and I was initially thinking of using a hosting platform once I start building workflows that clients can actually use. Right now, Iโ€™m still teaching myself n8n, so spending money doesnโ€™t feel like the wisest move yet. I feel like itโ€™ll take me a couple of months to really get the hang of it, and I was worried about paying per instance or per run, which could get expensive ๐Ÿ˜… That said, what you shared makes a lot of sense. Iโ€™ll check out the link you sentโ€”$6โ€“$12 a month as a fixed cost actually sounds pretty reasonable.
Best workflow to start?
With so many existing workflows that help maximize the power of n8n, Iโ€™m wonderingโ€”if youโ€™re a beginner, whatโ€™s the best way to get started building workflows? Which types of workflows are best to start with when learning n8n?

@Ros Wei Nice work on building the email-sending workflow! ๐Ÿ‘ We all start with simple automations, and building on top of those is the best way to learn. From my experience learning to code and automate, I usually start with one basic automation, then gradually add featuresโ€”like sending an email first, then triggering a Slack notification, or creating a calendar event based on the response. Totally agree that we all still have a lot to learn, and Iโ€™m really looking forward to seeing everyone here share their own workflows and ideas.

@Tanner Woodrum Thanks for sharing! Pulling data from email and other tools feels like a strong starting point. Pairing that with automations that generate reports or AI-assisted email replies sounds like an awesome workflow for beginners to build on.
Can Anyone suggest an up to date tutorial on N8N?
Iโ€™m looking for an up to date tutorial on using N8N for beginners new to N8N and Automation. Any help would be appreciated ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I donโ€™t have an end-to-end n8n tutorial in mind. But if you want to check this out Iโ€™ve been following Nate Herk on YouTube, and while everyone has different learning preferences, Iโ€™ve found his content really beginner-friendly and easy to follow. You might like his tutorials as well.
