- Where you're from - Minnesota - What club / team you're with - Dragon Divas - What stage of your steering journey you're on - and where you're going - I’ve steered for 3 years both at practices and in races. I’m hoping to steer at least one race in France this summer at the international IBCPC festival. - A fun fact about you - I’m testing for my 5th degree black belt this fall - What scares you shitless about race steering or what gives you the biggest thrill. - I’m nervous to steer a 2k but would like to get there! - [Bonus points if you include a selfie.] - photo is me monitoring my boat loading before a race

@Liisa Reimann Soo Bahk Do - a Korean style traditional martial art. I also have a black belt in Tai Chi and teacher certifications in both 😊.
Why Dragon Boating?
Curious what drew you all to dragon boating? I had never heard of dragon boating until I got breast cancer and eventually joined a BCS team. Serious cancer silver lining. I love it!

@Will Bober I feel the same way about wishing I had found dragon boating sooner. We often do 1 race a season on those Taiwanese boats. I tried steering at our practice there last year and could not do it. Not having that oar lock was rough! I left it to the festival steers with experience!

@Will Bober that’s cool! The ones at the Dubuque festival did not have those but glad they are doing that in some places
Paddle, steer, or both?
What's the split for you - or are you exclusively steering now? And if you are still paddling, how does that influence you as a steer?

I paddle and steer and am grateful to be able to do both as they compliment each other. I’m a better paddler because I steer and vice versa. I enjoy both so glad our team affords that opportunity!
Steers as team members: to pay or be paid?
Thanks to @Will Bober for inspiring this question. I'm curious.... how does your club structure the steering role? Is it a dues-paying role (i.e. do your steers pay club dues like everyone else), do you comp their dues, or do you pay your steers for their time?

Our club has several steers at different levels and most of us also paddle. We all pay dues like any other team member.
Homework: Race communication strategy
1️⃣ How would you approach giving commands during a race? Would you share responsibility with your drummer? What do you think would work best for you? 2️⃣ What have you observed from other steers that you would like to try or avoid?

I talk with the drummer ahead of time to plan out the race and calls. We use hand signals for powers which the drummer may signal if the pacers want a power or I may signal from the back. We typically make eye contact and then verbalize the call simultaneously so everyone hears it. I want to avoid miscommunication between the drummer and steer which is why I think the hand signals are clearer during a race. Verbal communication can be missed or misheard, or I’ve also seen times where the drummer hears a call from another boat and thinks it was for theirs and relay it.
