Airplane Design Review
One more long form video for you guys. This was the first time I designed an airplane from scratch, and its got some pretty wild features. Let me know what you think.

Hey everyone!
First of just want to take the time to say cheers Nate for putting these vids together and taking you time to publish it on this app. I’m Tommi form uk I’m here for gain more knowledge about chassis design and further myself learning more about cad. I’m in the very early stages starting a new project. I’m a welder by trade and on the side I do some car fabrication mainly roll cages. My work in cad mainly sheet metal, welding tables and fixtures. My next project I’m building a trailer and I’ll upload progress on the way as the trailer I’m building is slightly different from the norm but as the design progresses you will see why I’m here. First question tho and I’m not sure it’s covered in any vids that I have seen. Where are you guys getting components from ie suspension wheels seats etc. all the companies o have reached out to won’t give any solid bodies models for mocking up, and I’m thinking I’m going to have to design from Scratch? Any way hop you all are enjoying this as much as me !

@Tom Evans thanks so much!! I appreciate you being a part of the community. Appologies for the time delay, I was moving houses recently, so I have been focused on the analog world, rather than the digital one. But we are all settled in and getting back to my routine. Excited to have a welder in the group, that will be a tremendous resource for all of us with fabrication questions! Can't wait to see your progress on the trailer. Please post it here when you have something to share! For your question, the primary resource I use is https://grabcad.com/library tons of great stuff on there.
Sometimes you just build
I just wanted to take a minute to write a post to share some progress on one of my projects. I am currently building a Jeep (frame is from a YJ, tub is from a TJ) with an LS drive train and super duty axles. I recently finished putting on the rear 4 link and front 3 link. Some of my experience with putting together the design. Originally I started modeling everything up in Solidworks. I found models of an LS on Grabcad that was pretty high fidelity and started to use the attached frame dimensions to start modeling the chassis. As all my fellow CAD people know, this can get time consuming haha one of the positives and negatives of working with a mostly factory chassis is that mounts and things can only go where they fit. When you are going full custom, you can put link mounts anywhere you please. Well I decided to just start tacking mounts into the places that they would fit and then use the 4 link calculator to start mathing out anti-squat and anti-dive. Turns out I could make things work with a couple of adjustments. As an engineer by trade, I know that even the best of use get stuck in the design/analysis paralysis loop. Sometimes, instead of focusing on making the CAD work out exactly the way you want on the computer, you just need to get out into the garage and start tacking things in place and see what is going to work for your situation. Happy early 250th birthday America! I hope all the Americans enjoy Independence Day and stay safe out there!

Hi @Jason Skaggs this is incredible work! Super exciting to work on a custom four & three link setup. Nice find on the LS model from GrabCad. I probably have the same one, I use it all the time. An LS Jeep is going to be a beast, so the extra time for the motor mounts will be worth it for sure! That 4-Link Calculator is so useful, especially for anti squat and anti dive, pumped you found it, such a great resource. I totally resonate with you as an engineer, I often get stuck in analysis paralysis, but I'm pumped you are bringing your stuff into the real world. That thing is going to rip! Happy 4th!
I found old sketches from more than 20 years ago
Check these out, my mother found these in their storage unit. These were sketches I did circa 2004 and she saved. I remember most of these, but some were really surprisingly cool that I had forgotten about. Some have morphed over time, but all have lived in my head since then, and some have made it into solidworks. Check it out, let me know what you think, and post some of your sketches if you still have them.

@Cameron Warech in 2004, I was 14 years old, prety crazy to think back on
Your critique here please :)
Please find attached a solid body that I have made, It was the first time Ive fully developed something from complete scratch. Please may ask for your critique in how I have approached the modeling process. There is also an assembly but the parts list for this became very messy so I dont know how to get the full thing to you. Yes fillets, any sort of naming convention, is missing :)

Hi @Xander Steyn sorry I missed this earlier, we were moving the last few weeks. I will take a look at the part file and give it some thought

looks super good! do you plan to put gears on that rotating part? It looks like a can crusher to me.
