šŸŽ„ Composition Masterclass - 'Little Street' by Vermeer (Replay)
Replay from today's lecture/analysis of "Little Street" one of only 2 known landscapes by Vermeer. I cover: - shape compo - tonal compo - color compo + emotional storytelling - hot take on why this is his most important painting šŸ”„ Share your thoughts and takeaways below. I have so much more appreciation for Vermeer now. Wow.

Thanks for the great composition analysis! Hot tip: get Old Holland gold ochre if you want more tinting strength than regular yellow ochre.

Also noting that the black door anchors the lower left corner of the large compositional triangle, and the woman in the black doorway anchors the vertical center line of the triangle. I think the title 'Little Street' likely refers to the little alley as that is where the most vibrant hit of blue has been painted. This is likely his main intended focal point.
Color Abstraction Exercise today
Guys, this realism stuff is too hard and doesn't make the big money. I'm making a change. šŸ˜‚ Just kidding. I've been having huge breakthroughs in my work lately, and unlocking massive creative flow and now I'm able to document it. I'll talk more about this stuff in the future if you're interested. If you've been wanting to add more feeling, emotion, story and 'oomph' in your work, I'll be able to explain a simple model to follow. Nathan really helped me to 'codify' this. I think @Felix Schreiter you would be interested in this process.

Yes! Super interested. This also feels like an upcoming breakthrough in my creative process as well. I've been studying art, design and form for so many years, and it's great, but tends to make my thinking compartmentalized, so adding in abstraction, creative flow and unpredictability is just the thing to balance.
Still Life Oil Studies from photo ref
With these studies I was specifically focusing on warm/cool and desaturating color to focus the highest saturation at the focal point.

@Janet Abrahams Thank you! The first one with the blue vase is on a cheapo 8x10 Fredrix primed canvas panel on a thick paper stock, which I added two extra layers of primer. The roses are on Arches Oil Paper 140 lb. The Arches Oil paper is okay .. way better than then Windsor & Newton oil paper I used before. But the extra primed Fredrix panel is way better as the paint has a smoother glide and application and the grain shows nicer too.

@Chris Legaspi Yes, thanks for feedback and ideas. Like I could disappear the edge of the shadow side of the bowl into the table cloth and lower the value there to obscure details.

Okay thank you very much for crit. It's good for me to hear you mention about the intent and also that I missed the glow in her rib cage. That's the final 10% that is pushing me into new territory.
