Another LabChat Today!
Last Week's LabChat meeting was great! Thanks to everyone who joined. I've attached a screen shot below for your interest. Looking forward to having an even bigger crowd today. By now everyone should know the drill... I will be generating the code for the meeting at ten minutes before we start. I'll post it here in the general discussion section and on the calendar. Then I'll open the meeting at 11:55AM Eastern So please DO NOT launch the meeting before 12:00 noon! BTW: We have an enthusiastic new member named Van Neilson who I hope will be joining us today for the first time. I'm also hoping to get to meet Nano Flowers today. He's a young man who's looking for help with sophisticated mad science experiments he's doing at home. Here's the message he sent me... === "I’m reaching out to seek your advice regarding a homemade scrubber setup I’ve built to reduce nitric acid fumes (NOx gases) released during storage of my 1L 69% nitric acid in my home lab. "Here’s a brief description of my setup: "The nitric acid bottle is sealed with a zip-lock bag, which has a small hole connected to a plastic tube. The tube leads to a washing bottle repurposed as a bubbler, filled with 200 mL of 6% hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). The gas outlet from that bottle passes into a second bubbler containing 100 mL of 10% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. "All of the holes were sealed using hot glue after attaching the tubes. Despite ensuring there are no leaks I can detect, I still notice the odor of NOx fumes, which suggests incomplete absorption or an issue with the gas flow or sealing. "Could you please advise me on how to make this system more effective and safer for use in my lab storage? I’d really appreciate your insight into what might be going wrong or how to redesign it properly." === Fun stuff! I've included a few photos of his setup for your perusal. See you soon! Shawn

@David Glass That’s really interesting, i didn’t realize polyethylene was that permeable to non-polar gases like NO2! That definitely explains why I could still smell fumes even with everything is sealed. I’ll look into using PTFE or another material to reduce gas diffusion. The HiFloat idea is also pretty clever, I might experiment a bit and see if any coating helps improve the seal. Thanks!
