Negotiating a load
Well, I did it! I negotiated a load, not one time, but twice! Yes, I said twice. I negotiated it when I first booked it, but it was only for an extra $200. Then, when my driver sent me the pictures and I saw it took up most of the trailer, I had him measure it. The ratecon and the broker said it's on 15ft its a partial load. It measures 20 ft 5 in. I called them and then also sent an email with picture confirmation of the measurements and asked for another $500, since we cannot pick up another partial load with our 30ft mega ramp trailer. Most places do not like you to use the 5ft mega ramps to load on. They accepted my negotiation email. I couldn't believe it when the broker told me they could only do an extra $200 the first time. πŸ€‘

@Melissa Campbell Congratulations, Melissa. Wishing you many more wins like this!
Hello Community
Hi, my name is Mohammed. I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, and I plan to make $6k-$10K a month dispatching trucks. I want to get 3 things out of this course/community: 1. Share value and give more than what I take from this community. 2. Learn how to give my clients actual value instead of just overwhelming them with random loads. 3. Share my journey with a like-minded community. In my free time, I like to: 1. Go on road trips. 2. Spend time with family. 3. Go on hiking trips.

@Schrodingers Cat I totally agree with you! Nothing beats being out in nature, and skipping the crowded cafes is always a plus, haha. It’s great that you love camping and exploring. Wishing us both huge success here, so it's possible to afford plenty of time for outdoor adventures!

@L. G. Totally agree, Hearing directly from the carrier side give as a glance of the carriers' perspectives.
dispatch Q : Is starting a dispatch company as a non-american and run it from my country possible?
@Schrodingers Cat This is a good question considering we have so may people in the community from all around the globe. I had read some restrictions could be coming. Here is the latest info. It's called Dalilah's Law and happened as a result of young 5 year old dying after being hit by a driver with a CDL who was NOT a legal US citizen. This bill passed the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, but to date has NOT moved on to the House of Representatives although it is eligible. What it means...It would prohibit motor carriers from using dispatch services whose principal place of business is outside the U.S., or the bordering Countries Canada and Mexico, unless they are properly licensed locally. That means dispatchers outside the U.S. could be impacted, depending on how the law is finalized and enforced. BUT I will say this...There are tons of businesses in the US that are owned by people who are not U.S. citizens. You can form a LLC in plenty of states without citizenship or green card. The key point will be how the Bill is worded concerning where the business is operationally run...if Delilah's Law is passed. I think it's crazy because we are using the carriers MC & DOT numbers anyway. Online bank accts are available, and the laws are set up to make the government money. You pay fees, and a lawyer to find the loopholes. That's the way the U.S. works.

@L. G. Thank you for educating us about it! I have been keeping my eyes on that bill for a while now. My setup is actually an LLC incorporated in the US, and I have elected it to be taxed as a C-Corp, as I have other shareholders in the company. I have an Indonesian company as well, where I will hire and train dispatchers to deal with operations. But this still means your primary place of business is outside the US, making you ineligible to provide dispatch service. (Please note that my comment is not legal or financial advice) The only way that I found will make you eligible to keep dispatching is to open an actual US office, hire an executive who have 25% or more of the decision-making power regarding operations. The bill is not a law yet, therefore, it is not active yet. It is now headed to the full floor of the House of Representatives for a vote. It will need to pass all the legislative steps, all the way to the presidential signature. After the signature, you have a window of 1 year (The Grace Period) to stay operational. So we might be talking about 1.5 - 2 years until it is illegal for you to dispatch as a non-US dispatcher. Can you make it in 2 years and be able to open a US office and hire an operations manager? You have a very high chance if you seriously start now and invest time, effort, and a couple of hundred dollars to land your first carrier and optimistically reach 8-12 careers, it should be light work for you to do that. My current setup. I have 4 dispatcher/employees ready to be trained outside the US (aiming to make them 10 once the business is running and healthy). Once they are operational, our goal will be opening the US office, hiring 2-3 dispatchers, hiring a manager who has the final signature for any decision to stay compliant, hiring a marketing specialist, and finding a suitable office that doesn't drain the income. Please keep in mind that you can't hire US based contractors; they have to be hired as W-2 employees to be compliant.
Ready for carriers?
How did you know you were ready to start supporting your first carrier? Did you have your website in place first or did you just start making calls?

@Anna Allen Hey, thank you so much! I really appreciate it and wish you the absolute best of luck with your dispatching journey. Having experience in content creation will give you a significant advantage, as most of us, myself included, struggle with it. For the website, if you don't want the headache of creating your own website and other tools by yourself, then I would definitely recommend TruckAI. The reason I didn't go with it is that I just enjoy creating my own website/AI tools by myself and customizing them to suit my specific needs. So if you hate developing your own web apps, then Truck AI is a lifesaver! Now that I've seen your initial post again, I realized that your main question just went over my head lol. How do I know if I'm ready to start supporting a carrier? Is your website and tech stack part of it? Yes, but it is not the only thing that tells if you're ready. Just don't over-stress it; you either build it by yourself if you're comfortable with it, or take the one-stop shop solution of TruckAI, which is even better. From what I've seen in this course, other courses, and truckers' forums, it seems that there are specific aspects that concern truckers the most, and I think if you know how to deal with these aspects, you might be ready (not a fact, just my opinion). 1. Sending them to a cold market with no backhaul load, leaving them stranded in a state where demand is less than supply, puts you in a weak negotiation position, and the rates will be too low, which will ruin their average RPM. 2. Overbooking loads and ignoring the HOS limits. 3. Not getting enough loading instructions from the shippers. 4. Not getting any info about the loading window and detention time. 5. Ignoring the operators' preferences on where they want to go. 6. Miscalculation costs for a trip that ends up not being profitable (miscalculating tolls, fuel, etc..). 7. Not updating the shippers about their loads. That's the concern that I've seen a lot, and everywhere, if you can just deal with it, I think you will be a good help for any carrier.

@Robin Rhinehart Hi Robin. Yes, I totally agree with you, it's a one-stop shop for your entire tech stack, way more efficient than doing everything by yourself. I do recommend it as well.
Purchased Truk AI…
