Pro Tools version issue
I am very new to all of this so I'm sure the is a simple issue, but it threw me for a bit today. I spent a few hours last night getting my UI24R setup and able to record on my mac with Pro Tools. The issue was io channels being limited so I had to upgrade my version to Studio. Once upgraded it worked nicely. Today at rehearsal I setup everything and started recording but noticed there were no meters on any of the tracks. Turns out Pro Tools started up in the free mode rather than Studio. I had to get onto Wi-Fi and restart it to enable Studio. Is there any way to disable the lesser version? Or do I always need Wi-Fi to run PT?

I concur with this. The physical dongle is the easiest way to keep issues at a minimum. It is also useful when you start building up an inventory of plugins. Waves gives you licenses that you can keep on your computer. Most other manufacturers require an i-lok to activate their plugins.

DAW—which do you recommend?
I use Cakewalk by BandLab. I use the free tier. Pros—free, easy workflow, powerful for even professional level recordings (the Demos sound very professional). CONS-no comprehensive learning course. There are a couple of good YT channels but it’s piecemeal approach and time consuming. I’m a windows user and play guitar, piano, learning bass. Genres rock, blues, jazz, R&B, Soul and gospel sound (Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles)

I used to use whatever free DAW I was liking at the moment. I started taking some music classes at a local community college and was able to buy a student version perpetual license of Pro Tools Studio for $95. It is the same as the full version of PT with the exception of the amount of video and audio channels available being less. For music studio use the channel availability is not an issue. If you are doing video and need to use more than one video track it won't work for you. I highly recommend this purchase method if you are taking classes somewhere for anything. You don't need to be full time either.
