HOMEWORK - The beginnings...
So it's begun, (well it actually began 2 weeks ago but only getting round to uploading this little snippet. I'm easily distracted by all the cool pixelart and micro games others are posting on here ha-ha) So my first ever game is actually going to be based of a 10 minute coin dropper video by @Casey Faris combined with 16-tiles game by @Michael England that inspired me, and of course ChatGPT. I asked ChatGPT ages ago what game styles would you recommend to begin with for learning Pico-8 and it said 1. Top down dodge game 2. Single screen platformer game (No scrolling yet) 3. A breakout / Arkanoid style game 4. Tiny shoot'em up game (Shmup) So this will be my journeyman steps and i will update you all along the way. Now...I've used chatgpt to help me write and understand bits of code, especially the collision detection (AABB) Axis Aligned Bounding Boxes as i really want to get to grips with that than Map & Tiles collision detection (I will be focusing on Map & Tile detection on project 2.) I don't intend on being a "Script Kiddie" as i do want to understand how code works but feel free to ask me if you wanna know how i did something, i may be able to explain how i learnt it as i've struggled to really wrap my head around some bits (collision detection and tables is starting to make sense just need more practice using them) but I'm slowly getting there ha-ha. So here it is, not a long GIF (had to ChatGPT on how to record a GIF on PICO8 ha-ha) and it's not very exciting but the main thing is i know exactly what is going on in the background - pixelart will come later. Enjoy and "Get practicing!"

@Casey Faris honestly, thinking of were to start and over thinking it! Thinking my game will not look as good as other PICO8 game-devs is my hardest part to over come. I've so many game ideas i'd like to try and make but couldn't figure which genre to start with. So i'd go onto SPLORE to look at games that interested me, saw how good their Pixelart was then looked and how much code they'd written and i didn't understand the majority of it ha-ha, so i'd become deflated and think i can't do this. Hence my question to ChatGPT and funnily enough your Coin Dropper video came out around the same time to show how straight forward it can be. It was then i decided i'm going to remake a Top-Down Dodge game (your coin dropper game) to help me cement in PICO8 code. I then saw 16-Tiles released and thought hey, that's pretty similar game mechanics and it looks cooooool ha-ha, so i'm taking your game and taking ideas from Michaels game and i'm gonna mish-mash them together 😁. Its gonna look ugly but hey that's okay with me, i want to show others it doesn't matter, as long as it helps you learn how game mechanics work and most importantly you're having fun doing it!
Post a Game Idea! What you got?
Hey! Casey here (SpaceCat on YT) I would love to hear everyone's game ideas. Even if you have NO CLUE how to make it, post it here!

@Matt N 🤣🤣 you and me both. Your welcome
16 Tiles - My attempt at a small arcade game.
Dodge/jump the missiles as they drop to the ground. Collect powerups (1up/score points) to help you reach the high score. Enjoy and be brutal with your reviews... I can take it. Note, I used VS Code to write the game. Copying the code to Pico-8 was a nightmare and severely messed up the indentation. itch.io link - 16 Tiles by TraxRyu

This was pretty impressive Michael and has inspired me to see where i want to get my top down dodge game vision too. I'm currently in the very early learning stages but this is the level l want to reach. your character animation was cool, loved the little sprint dash effects. Its movement feels really good and his jumping. Almost looked like an AmongUs character to me ha-ha. The falling obstacles animations / sound sfx when they smash and explode were good as well. Well polished for a Top down game. Thanks for sharing.

amazing game you've created there. I've not got to the end yet but you do have a substantial amount of levels ha-ha (Don't want to spoil it for others just incase) Your page explaining everything about your game is very well laid out. Level design is good. Some very clever tricks with certain bricks there as you increase up in the levels (they caught me of guard in several instances ha-ha). Also i liked how you implemented the "Time-Bomb" feature, man that was useful for some of those really difficult bricks to get around, otherwise you'd be there forever. The laser idea is a good little feature, it came in handy for some of those sneaky levels too. Took full advantage of the jump feature, so when the ball was on the other-side of the screen and i wasn't fast enough i just used the jump and direction to help get over there quicker. The retry button was a godsend!! I would of cried if i had to start from the beginning again. Wish i had "Mega-Ball", "Super-Laser" & "Extra-live" more often ha-ha. On in all, amazing contribution. How long did this take you from start to finish to make this??

@Lucas Galib my pleasure. That's an impressive time scale with having a full time job plus other hobbies ha-ha. It's nice to hear though as I'm a complete noobie to this and likewise have a full time job, kids and other hobbies to juggle. Keep it up as it's very encouraging to see others on here knocking out their games
