Me 'n Stan Getz
Won't be here for transcription lab, nor practice club, on Monday, so posting transcription here. Happy weekend all.

@Matt Holborn I'm reasonably happy with it to be honest. I held back and concentrated on getting it as close as possible at slower speeds before giving in to the temptation to let rip at full throttle. I think this helped make it cleaner and more solid than my previous transcription recordings. Yes it was fun to do. Thanks.

@Matthias Brandes Welcome. I hope you get as much out of it as I do. It’s a fantastic resource for leatning jazz violin.
What tune gives you the most difficulty?
For me it’s anything based on those Coltrane changes like countdown or Giant Steps. I find I can play over it if I’m reading it but I forget the changes really easily. If I play it with anyone in a gig or jam setting, it always ends up a car crash on my part How about you?

All the key changes in B section of Have you met miss Jones springs to mind, although I have struggles with lots of tunes.
What are you practising this weekend?
I haven’t had any chance to play this weekend. Apart from a gig in town. I’m calling some tunes I don’t know that well to try and get some new tunes down. What are you working on?

Revisiting chords and arpeggios of a couple of simple standards that I thought I knew! Also working on transcribing a bit for upcoming transcription lab (which I can't attend live unfortunately)
Lick of the Week
Challenge! Record your version of this, depending on what’s doable for you, either… In the original key (C Major over a G7) In a few other keys Inside an improvisation over a standard Or as we did last night in practise club, see below… We worked on this one in practise club last night. We took the pattern that this line is based on and played it all the way through all the chords in the C major scale, helping us understand why the melody works and how we can use it. What does this do? Helps us navigate the major scale with patterns and enclosures Drills the sound into our ears and fingers Serves as a technical exercise for our left hand If you are interested in trying out the jazz violin practise club for freejust send me a message or comment on this post.

@Sarah akpedze Amewu Go for it Sarah.
“How” or “what”
A question for you today. As jazz violinists, when you practice, do you mainly work on “how” you execute your notes or “what” notes you play?

I’ve been giving some thought to this recently. Listening to recordings I do to post on Skool has opened my ears to just how poor my intonation, timing and tone can be. Think some forensic slow practice is in order.

That's really interesting Viktor. I've known some very gentle and encouraging teachers and also some stricter ones, but the 'Russian approach' sounds like it might a bit traumatizing. I'd be very happy to hear any tips you, or anyone else, might have that might help me clean up my sound and technique, which I think wasn't too bad when I studied classical music as a teenager, but has probably suffered from a lifetime of pub gigging.

Hi. I'm Irish but have lived and worked in Mallorca for 34 years. I work as a musician in other genres, but really love trying to play jazz.
