Question
Hopefully this is the right space for these questions regarding the functional course Q1: when holding a class, if someone gets panicked when the teacher says " focus on your breath or focus on x" how can you settle them or direct them back to a safe practice. I have a friend who really wants to get back into yoga and interested in breathwork, but every time the teacher directs them to focus on x she gets panicked and has to leave? Q2: While doing these breathwork practices (in the course) are we expanding the belly (big inhales)/ wave like to the chest or is it simple light inhales and exhales? Thank you!

Hi Charlotte! I’m May, part of the ReWild Team. For support on the Functional Certification, you’d reach out to us at breathe@rewildbreathwork.com, but for these questions, I’ll be happy to answer here: First, such a thoughtful question. For some, being told to “focus on your breath” can actually feel activating, their system is trying to protect them. In that moment, you can gently invite them to notice their exhale, their feet, the space around them, or simply rest and let the breath happen naturally - the key is choice. For your second question: in the Functional Course, the breath is soft, light, and nasal, not big wave-like inhales like we use in Conscious Connected Breathwork. It’s about balance and nervous system regulation over activation. (If you’re ever unsure about how to support someone safely, that’s something Jamie explores more deeply in the practitioner training. Remember, scope of practice is most important.)
