Artists! Are you trying to make a hit or music that you love?
I noticed something while going through interviews and discussion boards. There seems to be this notion that your goal is intrinsically to create a hit song. Personally, I subscribe to the idea that if you make a song that you are proud of, you have succeeded. To me, this feels like the best way to resonate with a listener because often discerning listeners can detect a lack of authenticity, so to speak, more so in recent years. I think that is where the idea of an "industry plant" is significant to this conversation. I also believe that creating a hit song, while extraordinarily beneficial to someone's career, is just part of the process, as though it will happen if you continue growing as an artist or by mistake sometimes. Of course, there are tried and tested methods of creating a popular or catchy song, I understand that. Labels seem to be pursuing "Tik Tok" songs for their artists and the average length of charting songs has dwindled. I can't help but feel that there is something lost with this ideology but perhaps it's my own reservations. What do you think?

I don't really subscribe to the idea of purposely making a "hit record". The way I see it: make music that comes from an emotional and real place which allows listeners to connect with, combining with dope marketing and there you go...build a catalogue of quality music, promote it and think long term...

@Ozymandias King Yeah, I don't really think Harry Styles went to the studio and said: "ok guys let's make the best selling album ever" lol

What Jeff said, and ads! Collaborate, run ads, repeat...
Which KPIs demonstrate a "successful" song release?
Hey gang, this is a rather broad question but I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this: when it comes to marketing a song, I rely on certain KPIs that help me define whether a song is successful or not and if I should invest more marketing dollars to really get this moving. My main KPIs are as follows: - Price per conversion on FB & IG ads. The lower, the better, as this is an indicator that the ad is performing well! - Spotify save rate (15% and up) - Spotify playlist adds (user generated playlists) - Number of Shazams per day What are some of the KPIs that you guys pay attention to and let me know if I forgot something. I'm looking forward to your ideas and thoughts.
Content strategies
What are some content strategies you guys use? Like when I think of social media these days, I think of reels, shorts and Tik Tok, which makes me wonder what are some other great ways to create? Freestyles are cool, but get a bit repetitive after awhile. For artists like me who don’t do skits or dances, it can feel like we have no other options. What kind of content do you guys make? And by content I mean content that more reserved artists can utilize or content that is universal.

Peace Lucky, content pieces that have really worked out for me are production breakdowns, freestyles, personal branding pieces (self-interviews or addressing a certain topic via selfie-video) or documenting (this could be studio work or when you're travelling to a certain place/city etc.). I think in 2023 it's going to be crucial to add depth to your content, like for instance telling a story that fans can connect with...
