Hi, I'm Macarena and I'm preparing the C1 exam. The complex part, from my point of view, is Reading and Use of English.
Real Challenge
Well done, everyone!! I love seeing your meaningful contributions. As you rightly observed, the paragraph is quite formal and inconsistent in register — that's why it would get a 2 in CA. So here's a new challenge: rewrite the paragraph in a suitable tone for a review. If you're looking for your next binge-watch, this probably isn't it. It is widely acknowledged that streaming platforms have transformed the manner in which we watch TV, but this series? Total letdown. The characters are flat and boring — furthermore, the plot presents several deficiencies with regard to coherence. I nearly switched off after episode two! Nevertheless, it must be stated that the soundtrack is brilliant, so it's not all bad.

If you're looking for your next binge-watch, this probably isn't it. Streaming platforms have completely changed the way we watch TV, but this series was a real letdown. The characters are flat and boring, and the plot is confusing. I nearly switched off after just two episodes! Even so, I have to say that the soundtrack is brilliant, so it's not all bad.
Communicative Achievement
As you may know, CA assesses your ability to write according to the conventions of the task, among other aspects. Reflect on the way a review should be written: formal, informal or semi-formal? And how's the paragraph below written? Today's task! 📝 Read this paragraph from a review of a streaming series. The examiner gave it a 2 in Communicative Achievement. The grammar is fine… so what went wrong? 🤔 If you're looking for your next binge-watch, this probably isn't it. Post your answer below: why did CA get a 2? Bonus: find the six formal expressions that don't belong in a review and rewrite them. 👇

The author of the review mixes formal and informal register. For example: The expression, “but this series?” Is more informal in comparison with the expression “it must be stated that”, which we can change by “I have to say that”. Neverthless, is also formal, it would be better if we change it by “Even so”. Also, the expression, “presents several deficiencies with regard to coherence” is extremely formal, we can say “Is confusing”.
1st Task
Good morning, Cambridge Accelerators! ☀️ Today's task comes from Topic Sheet 01 · Work & Careers. This is exactly the kind of question you could meet in the Writing paper or in Speaking Part 4: 💬 "It is the employee's responsibility, not the employer's, to maintain a healthy work–life balance." Do you agree? How to answer: ✍️ Write a mini-paragraph of around 50 words 🎩 Formal tone — no spoken-only chunks 📌 Use at least two chunks from the harvest table and underline them ⭐ Bonus point: open with a cleft (What… is…) or close with an impersonal passive Post your answer below 👇 — I'll be reading.

What is crucial is creating a healthy work-life balance by taking into account individual necessities of employers in order to not “burning out” them. The employees play an essential role because they have to develop management skills that helps them in organizing the time they spend at work, but employers have to contribute in maintaining a calm and stable environment that leads to a healthy work-life balance. But, “it is fair to expect employees to get a work-life balance without the support of employees?”
