Food Photography? Yum vs. Ick
Hi Chris and PCs I've been a private chef working for individual families for over 8 years. I also have over 20 years as a professional food stylist and recipe developer. I'm so happy you have started this forum for PCs like us. I'm troubled, however, by the food photos that private chefs (both new and experienced) post here and on their websites. Too often, I have absolutely no idea what I'm looking at. Also, chefs tend to take photos of their food in a kitchen surrounded by and presented on stainless steel which casts a grey shadow over everything. Chefs also tend to snap a photo only from the diner's perspective which doesn't necessarily show it at its best. If if would be helpful to you all, I'd like to offer to host some kind of informational feedback forum or ongoing workshop to help chefs show their food in the best light. Is this anything members or the moderators would be interested in? Here are a couple pics that I think work pretty well.

@Jayson Reynolds Don't waste your money. I tried them, but the light is not good for food. Maybe other product shots like jewelry, but I've had no luck with them

Your technique and attention to detail are clearly evident in your plating. I'm sure your guests were very impressed when these dishes were served. Two things are working against you in these shots if you want to use them to market your skills. 1-there is a wash of grey, reflected light cast over everything from the stainless table, overhead florescent lights and very likely, the surrounding kitchen equipment too. Move these dishes in front of a window and let natural sunlight show their natural beauty. 2-use different plates. Blue, blue-green, and grey plates suck all the life from food and are almost never used in food photography. Also, be careful where you focus. The red garnish is grabbing all the attention in some of these shots where the main subject is out of focus-example, the red garnish on the chocolate cake. I can't tell what any of the stuff behind it is or how it relates to the cake and ice cream.

New in town
I'm a former restaurant owner, I sold my business and this year I want to launch a private chef service bussines in Mallorca. I am looking to learn and any advice could help me. Really excited to find this community

A couple suggestions: use simple plates without fussy decorations to show your food. I can't tell in the first photo what is food and what is plate. The last photo of the fish is great! You show the flakiness of the fish beautifully but I'd recommend adding a bit more sauce underneath and maybe a bit on the fish too. I love the crispy (sage?) leaves, but a few more would help communicate the flavor of the dish more profoundly. The veggies in the back are distracting and out of focus. I'd either eliminate them completely and concentrate the attention on the lovely fish, or increase your depth of field to show them in focus and/or maybe bring some of their color to the foreground for balance.

Think carefully about what you are trying to communicate through your photos/videos. Please nix the AI generated flames and make sure your food is in focus. Why does the food fade in and out of focus in your first video? (Also, the religious message? I don't think that helps you.)
