Hi from Brno :)
Hello, I am Lydi from the Czech Republic. I've been working as an ELT freelancer since January this year. I only got my TEFL qualification last year, so I am still a newbie. This is one reason why I joined this community, for advice and development. My plan for the next 30 days is to get more clients, establish my niche and also gain more confidence and knowledge about marketing.

@David Cummins yes, it does, thank you. I also enjoy working with professionals and have thought that if my chosen niche doesn't work out, something with business English would be my next choice. I was thinking of doing a certification course in business English, but now I think if I do the CPE exam (I have CAE now) it will give me the business part too. Or would you suggest something else?

@David Cummins I understand your point. The thing is, with the CPE, I always wanted it :). And I will think about it until I have it :) . I feel it will give me more confidence as a teacher. I want to teach higher levels, I love all the fancy and sophisticated words that (in my eyes) start at the B2 level. And I know where to look for the target audience - on LinkedIN.
If you couldn't teach 1:1, what would you do?
Here's a challenge for all teacher entrepreneurs: Take all of your 1:1 lessons away....How would you get your clients their desired results? It's natural, I think, to default to 1:1 lessons or even larger live sessions. But I also think most are surprised when the transformation can still be achieved without them. Often times, clients prefer other forms of communication: - text support - asynchronous video feedback - dare I say old-school emailing I'm not saying this is the way to go, but if you challenge yourself to remove the biggest time suck from your business (live, 1:1 meetings), you'll see so much opportunity. So who's up for the challenge? It has two parts: Part 1: What specific result do you get for your niche clients? Part 2: How could you do that without ever meeting them? Have at it 😊

I think it can be done by pre-recorded live lessons + provided material with tasks + the possibility to submit their work via email or some platform + get feedback from me in the same way - so basically the same way as 5in30. Part 1 - The result would still be the same for my niche - gaining enough communication skills in English to become an independent traveller. Part 2 - The recorded course

5 things I want in my course
Hi everyone, I tried to list the 5 things I want in my English travel course + the things I would put there. What do you think? @Andrew Woodbury @Michael Landry @Leonardo Gomes WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO TEACH? 1. Travel-related vocabulary and phrases - divided by themes (greetings, introduction, asking for directions, shopping, etc.) 2. Listening - different accents, looking for specific words, getting familiar with hearing the alerts, 3. Problem-solving – the ability to ask for help, expressing misunderstanding, asking for repetition 4. Self-study habits - creating routine and system for learning 5. Speaking with confidence - different sorts of exercises, practising with their classmates, recording their own voice and sending it back for feedback, gradual exposure (visiting some restaurant in their city where staff only speaks English, calling to book accommodation, etc.) WHAT ARE 5 THINGS YOU WOULD PUT IN THAT COURSE? 1. After class activities/ Homework - 2. Possibility to ask for advice outside of class (DM) 3. Assessment/ Action plan/ – “ can do statement” followed up by a plan to continue their journey 4. Plan /Schedule for self-study + some activity tracker maybe, so they can see their progress 5. Roleplay

Vocabulary and phrases - Again, I was talking about the phrases they need to learn to order in a restaurant, ask for help, etc. And this is not region-specific. Or maybe you mean it differently, Andy? Speaking with confidence - I can correct this to Speaking practice 😊
Defining my niche
Hi guys, I am doing module 1 , just finished the “student profile” and “defining your niche”. I am still not sure about my niche. I was sure that I would change it, but then I watched the part “don´t give up on your niche” 😅. So I am sticking with it for now and will see how it goes. Well, I'm not sure I'd call it experience. I created the structure for the course (without the actual content, as I wanted to see the reaction before putting more time and work into it) and started promoting it on FB, LI and my website as an individual and group course in August - but no one responded. I blamed it on bad timing and bad marketing :). That's the main reason why I'm not sure about this niche, because I haven't heard from anyone. But I know there are people who don't travel abroad for this reason (or they depend on their companion). Dyslexic independent travellers - this was not planned at all. I put the dyslexic students there as a suggestion. I have a few of them and I feel that I should get some specialisation to be able to help them properly because yes, they need a specific approach to learning and I am still a teacher - a beginner. Really, at this point I have no idea how I would specify the type of traveller (niche).
