[START HERE] Welcome to The Grove!
Welcome to The Grove! "The martial forest is one family”. My hope is that together we can shape the culture and curriculum of this community so that The Grove will come to represent a level of quality and skill of which we can all be proud. I am still building out the space, but there will be free content for Shuai Jiao, Ba Gua, basic gong fu and more. There will also be focused training cohorts starting soon with options including -Liang & Cheng style Bagua Zhang -Beijing Shuai Jiao -Chen Style Tai Ji Quan & Da Bei Quan -Gong Fu basics and Praying Mantis Kung fu -Qi Gong As someone who has either trained with me in the past or expressed interest in learning one of the arts I teach you are here as one of the founding members of the community. You have probably heard me say before that I don’t take myself that seriously, but it take the arts I teach very seriously indeed. In this space I am a teacher, a coach and a fellow martial artist studying as diligently as I can. Reach out with any questions and I look forward to sharing this space with you all. If you don’t mind, please take a moment to leave a comment and let us know a few things about yourself. -name and location -age and previous/current martial arts experience -what you are interested in learning Feel free to add anything else you would like to share. This is your space!

My name is Luke, 26 y/o and I'm from Central New York. I did some shotokan karate when i was in middle school and Yang style Taiji when I was 17. I recently started studying martial arts in earnest a few years ago after watching Dune. I found a group close to where I was living at the time and trained Taboada Balintawak Escrima. After a short time I started learning Maphilindo Silat from a guy there and was introduced to the Dog Brothers. After I moved away I started teaching myself Xingyiquan, with a little bit of Emei style Baguazhang and Yang style Taijiquan. I've also dabbled a little in Muay Boran and done my best to continue my silat studies through YT. I find myself really drawn to styles and systems of martial arts where you flow. I especially have a desire to make sure my kung fu is functional (along with everything else). I'm mainly interested in Shuai Jiao as I have no real grappling/wrestling experience (outside of a couple months of BJJ) and I want to bridge that gap. I'd be thrilled as well to find more resources for Bagua and Taiji.

@Kirby Mannon that makes me really excited to hear that! It seems that the internal styles have a lot of Shuai Jiao mixed in.
Hello
I am excited to be in this group. I am currently studying Xing Yi.

@Marty Reeder that's awesome! Sometimes I find myself getting really impatient for applications that I don't put in enough time for the basics and find myself doubling back to work on the basics

@Marty Reeder I agree! It's nice that you can set your own pace and ensure you fully grasp the material. I, personally, found it difficult at first, especially with Xingyi, to know how to understand the movements and ensure proper posture. Thankfully I was able to find enough sources to remedy these problems. Or so I hopr 😂 Hopefully, I can find other similarly interested people to train with. It's difficult to fully understand applications without a training partner.
Beijing Shuai Jiao 101
If you haven't checked it out yet, we have a full video course up on YouTube you can check out to start learning the basics of Beijing style Shuai Jiao! Shuai Jiao is one of those arts that ends up making everything else better if you train it the right way. Like they say, "One year of shuai jiao is worth 10 years of other styles". An aspect of this to understand is "which" year of shuai jiao is worth so much? It's the first year where you learn all the fundamentals and basics. Understanding these fundamentals and their usage will be important in how we integrate them into other parts of our practice. Also, if shuai jiao is one of the main reasons why you are here, drop a comment and let me know more about your goals and what you are hoping to learn!

Hi Sonny! Loving this video so far. I'm on the second waist exercise and they're far more challenging than anticipated. Shuai Jiao was the main reason I started watching your videos on YT recently and came to this community. Super excited!

I noticed that some courses are locked by tier and was wondering how do we unlock them? I tried looking for an additional paid tier and found none when I clicked on the "unlock" link on the courses.

I'm an avid martial artist with a background in FMA and silat. Been teaching myself kung fu for the past couple years, and really anything else.
