Always wanted to make a chess set and board and case. The dark pieces are from a dead cherry tree I took down in my backyard, the light from some popular that I had lying around and the light on the board and case from a piece of maple firewood. Was a good test for doing compound cuts on the scroll saw
In 2020, when we were in lockdown due to COVID and with still 4 years to go before my retirement, I decided to go back to school in order to obtain a certificate of cabinet/furniture maker (2 year-course, 1 day/week). In my younger years i bought and rebuilt my house with the help of my father in law, who was a contractor/carpenter (correction: I helped my father in law 😉). Since I have been working as a corporate lawyer, making something with my hands was very satisfying. So, I decided to go back to school (adult education program), buy some machinery and after 2 years I got my certificate (that was in 2023). This is a good BASIS, but most importantly, we learned how to solve the problems and mistakes. And believe me, I still make a lot of them.😄
@Ian Jenkins I prefer both, although I don't have both of them 😁. When I built my workbench, I thought that a flat surface was more than sufficient. It was/is more a table on casters. However, at school we had a Ulmia workbench with both dogholes, two vises (a front and a tail vise) and hydraulic height adjustment (!!). This bench was a real luxury and a pleasure to work on. Now, answering your question (😉), I should go for both dogholes and (front) vise(s).
Although we do not have a dog, I made a pet bed on wheels (for easy transport and floor cleaning), with reinforced corners (puppies like to chew on wood, starting with the corners). It is made of pine and without the use of pocket holes.
