@Lorenzo Circiello Lauro welcome! love Man of the Light but don't know Passion, what record is it on? Also would love to hear some Neapolitan tunes if you have any favourites/who should I listen to? Not a tradition I know much about! I was in Salerno only about 2 weeks ago on holiday, beautiful part of the world you live in, and the food is just the best

Ah, found it, one of those that only exists on YouTube! Great track, please post a vid of your transcription would love to hear it!

Been really enjoying getting more into this tune, thanks @Kaia K for introducing me to it! (I find it really hard to post stuff without wanting to redo it over and over and fix things I don't like, especially when I make the mistake of setting up the camera at the least flattering angle, but gonna be brave and do it ha - feels like the sort of healthy pain that's probably good for you right, and watching myself back is so useful it's worth the discomfort) Got so so many things I want to work on and introduce into my playing, but sometimes good to just jam and see what's stuck so far

@Kaia K mostly because that's the key the backing tracks are in that I could find on YouTube ha! I use ireal as well but prefer backing tracks if I can find nice ones

@Matt Holborn Thank you! I think I'm mostly just trying to expand all of that language that naturally flows out - it still feels to me like I have a small handful of phrases that I fall back on, especially if I'm playing faster. I really enjoy transcribing, but turning that into exercises that I will remember and come back to consistently is a bit of a challenge. I might spend half an hour getting a phrase down in every key and then never come back to it after that practice session, and then it doesn't stick, so yeah, organising my practice time is something I want to figure out...
playing harmony
I wonder if anyone has any tips for finding the 3rds (and 7ths) in a chord from the chord name and in time with the melody etc. I can play the whole arpeggio no problem but picking out a specific note seems to addle my brain!

I've been working on similar for different chord tones recently. Try putting on a backing track, either a standard or even just something that goes through the cycle of fifths, nice and slow, and for each chord play the 3rd or 7th and think or say to yourself "I'm in G major and I'm playing the 3rd which is B" or something along those lines, and really visualise the letter names in your head. Do it slow enough that you have time to correct and find the right note, then you can gradually increase the speed. I've found I've made progress quite quickly like this, focussed deliberate practice of this stuff is kinda boring on the surface but it does get results!
What are you up to this weekend?
Il be honest, I’m doing nothing jazz violin related. I’m at the Islay Whisky festival in Scotland this weekend. Today I’m at the Lagaluvin distillery day and sampling the distillers edition bottle… However I’d love to know what people are working on this weekend I’d that’s how you are spending this weekend.

A similar photo, sipping my final negroni of an Italian holiday before heading back home tomorrow (13 hour train ride back from Florence to London!) Got a lot of practicing to do when I get home - a couple of gigs next weekend with my silly Balkan band (playing Balkanarama - involving leading a Balkan jam apparently which my band is wholly under qualified for) and then got to get the trombone chops back for a salsa band gig at pizza express the following week. Going to have to resist the temptation to just mess around with jazz violin practice for a bit...
Any recommendations for the microphone?
Hi everyone! I am considering to buy a small microphone for the violin. Any recommendations? Pros/cons? Thank you in advance!

@Olena G. With a mic, if you have to turn up loud, you'll almost always have issues with feedback. Pickups shouldn't have issues with feedback so you can crank up the volume. So it largely depends on what scenarios you're looking for amplification in - are you playing with small groups of mostly acoustic instruments? Is there a drum kit? Other horn players?

@Olena G. Yeah I think in that scenario a pick up is your best bet! I know Matt uses a schertler stat v which are meant to be excellent but are quite pricey. I have a fishman v200, sound isn't wonderful but it was cheap ish and it does the job, might upgrade at some point. I used to have a Band pickup which are a decent starter option which requires no adjustment to the bridge. It'll make sure you're heard, which is most of the battle in those large loud band scenarios
