Audition
Hi all, Just a little background, I'm a retired Broadcast Engineer, I've been in radio and television many years (40). I mainly worked "behind the scenes" designing and building studios and control rooms and yes audio booths. My Wife, a retired telecommunications engineer started writing books. One day she said "Hey, why don't you put that radio voice of yours to work narrating my books." And here I am. So far I have published 35 audio books. I am ALWAYS looking for ways to improve and have watched many, many of Peters videos. Peter you are fantastic! Anyway, I thought this group would be fantastic for improving and getting feedback. I'm attaching a recent audition I did and would like any and all feedback, good or bad, let me have it. I feel this is the only way to improve and some of the courses out there that guarantee you will make thousands with your voice if you only send them 3,000.00 are, well let me just say, be careful. So, without further ado, here is my audition.

Hi Steve, I’m new to all this so bear with me. I enjoyed your style of delivery, it’s warm and clear and a good pace I think. The only thing that came across was a slight reverberation or buzzing at times. I don’t think it’s my speakers and I don’t have the experience yet of knowing the cause. I hope that is helpful for you. All the best with your audio books.

Years ago I was trying to order drinks in a pub without success, it was busy and loud and being short didn't help. The chap next to me said, "You're timid". No. Not timid or shy, so it annoyed me that he presumed to know my character because I didn't have volume in that particular situation. Guffawing and singing helped.
How to get into tourists' ears!
Have you wondered who does the narrations of the places you visit when away looking round old palaces, art galleries or exhibitions? Well it could be YOU! Here's Peter's guide as to how to get into this type of work.

Thanks Peter, it sounds a very interesting aspect of voice work.
You you, er, use, mmm, filler sounds?
Do you find yourself using filler words or sounds in between thoughts? Here's why this may be happening for you!

Thanks Peter. I recorded and found I was using quite a few filler sounds, partly I think because it felt like an unnatural conversation, no flow, so I'll have to ask someone if I do it a lot. But I have been known to say ,'Hang on a minute. I'm not sure what I think about that yet'. So often people look for a quick answer on everything. I like the exercises though. I'm off to find a' play and repeat' person. Thanks again.

A video would be good, Peter. I think I get your drift but it would be good to see if there are alternatives to the ones I'm using already.

I've always been interested in the voice but especially since lockdown. Expression through the voice in all it's forms is something I want to pursue
