🎄 Why Scrooge Is More Than Just a Miser
Students often see Scrooge as cold and cruel… but he’s actually one of Dickens’ most powerful symbols of change. Scrooge is: 💰 Obsessed with money and control ❄️ Emotionally closed-off and isolated 👻 Haunted by guilt, fear and regret ✨ Capable of complete transformation Next time you revise him, ask: 👉 Is Scrooge naturally cruel, or is he shaped by his past? 👉 Does Dickens want us to judge Scrooge — or learn from him? 👉 Why is Scrooge the perfect character to carry a message of social responsibility? Here are the essential quotes that sum up Scrooge’s character — and what they show: “Solitary as an oyster” → Suggests he is closed off, but has the potential to open. “Hard and sharp as flint” → Shows his toughness and lack of warmth. “Are there no prisons?” → Reveals his cruel view of the poor and lack of empathy. “I am not the man I was” → Marks the start of his transformation. “I will honour Christmas in my heart” → Shows his new compassion and generosity. Try turning one into a mini analysis paragraph today. ✍️🔥
