Interview question
I share a recent interview question asked by Baringa (this is a consulting company focused strongly on energy, utilities, and the energy transition). From a student forum / database (for internship). The question was: 'Why do some renewable power plants continue generating electricity even when electricity prices turn negative? and when do prices become negative ? do you know any example? '

Very interesting!I would add that some renewable energy plants may continue generating because they benefit from several factors: incentives or subsidies, very low marginal costs compared with conventional power plants (such as nuclear or combined-cycle plants), additional revenues from GOOs, and certain PPAs where the agreed floor price can even be negative. In those cases, the buyer still pays the generator despite negative market prices, meaning the project remains financially protected by the PPA.
