Fueling Plan
How does everyone handle their fueling during a race? I usually just wing it and go by feel, although that is likely why I DNF'd last year. I was taking one Huuma gel about every 30 minutes and I was sipping on Tailwind the rest of the time. That is including whatever goodies I could find at the aid station. πŸ˜€ I have seen there are a few apps that help you dial in your nutrition. Has anyone used one? What ones do you recommend? I do not want to leave anything to chance this year.

@Liza Shulyayeva I may have to try Maurten, I have never used it before. The same gels over and over again get old for me so a variety would be nice.

@Jay Lopez interesting thought. I'll have to give it a try.

I have hill repeats on Saturday and long run on Sunday. I just need to find a place to do hill repeats now. Where I live it is quite flat. I have been known to run highway overpasses. πŸ˜‚

@Caroline Claassen unfortunately I got wrapped up in a project at my house and was unable to run all weekend. 🫀

I'll take running with a stranger. Training for ultras is usually filled with miles upon miles of solo runs, so a silent stranger would be welcome. Silent is especially good because I'm not much of a talker anyhow.πŸ˜‚

There's always something new in gear... shoes, nutrition, HR monitors (hehe), gadgets. Anything you saw recently worth sharing? Or that you'd like to try? Or that caught your eye? Let us know in the comments. I'll share my finds below! ⬇️

Since my ultra marathon training just kicked in, I was due for some new shoes. I was at my local running store looking to pick up another pair of Altras. The clerk turn me on to a new pair of Altras I had never heard of. Altra Forward Via. It is almost like Hoka and Altra had a baby. I'm not a huge fan of high cushion shoes but I'm going to give them a try.

@Ellie Mackin Roberts I will have to check them out. Last year I did sort of the same thing at my last ultra, but I switched between Lone Peaks and Speed Goats. I typically like to stay with Altra, but I was running a very technical rocky trail and the rocks that I was running across were just tearing my feet up through the Lone Leaks. Speed Goats handled them so much better.
Heart rate monitor straps
I've never had a HRM other than my watch. Since I'm now more training based on HR zones, I'd like to purchase one and got my eyes on the Coros bicep strap or the Suunto one because it's on sale. And of course I'm curious if anyone here uses it: - If you have a HRM, which one? Are you happy with it? - Specific question for the female runners here: a chest strap looks uncomfortable in my eyes because of a sports bra. Have you ever experienced it being so, for example during longer runs? That's the biggest reason why I'd pick a bicep strap.

For those of you rocking the Garmin heart rate monitor, I hope you have better luck with them than I did. They never lasted past the first battery change. I am a Garmin fanatic but I could not stick with them for the heart rate monitor. I personally switched to the Polar H10. It does everything I need. It displays my current heart rate on my Garmin, sends my data to Garmin and the battery is easily replaceable and actually works after you replace it.

@Ellie Mackin Roberts I was not aware that they had a rechargeable version. If / when I need to replace my Polar, I will check this out. Thank you.

I am a recovering alcoholic. I picked up running as a way to quit drinking. I enjoyed challenging myself so much that I began running Ultra Marathons.
