Dumbbell training
My dog hated dumbbell and it got to a point where he refused to do it. So I had to go back to the beginning and retrained it using shaping. He now loves it - which is great. The problem is that he is too excited as you can see and hear in this video. I have found that throwing in a few unexpected commands (sit etc) helps get it under control. And I wait for him to silence before I throw it, but he still leaks. Any tips? I will also welcome tips on how to actually throw the dumbbell!

Shaping is the most powerfull way to teach stuff. Takes longer but you create love for the game. Here in this video you see even over-excitement with all the spins he does 😆. Question: did you teach him these spins? Of somehow you rewarded that behavior?

@Michelle Henry I would use a leash (to avoid him to spin) going to your starting point where you throw the dumbel. Keep the dog close to you or keep him in a close heel or focused heel. And throw your dumbel after he does a close heel or focused heel, sit, throw. That’s my first idea. Every time you let him spin he rewards himself and increases the behavior. If he knows spin on command, he should only spin “on” cue, not by himself 😜. But hey, spontanious behavior is also something we want to keep in shaping. So there is always a “yes, but….” Good thinking work that we are doing here 💪 let us know how it goes with the leash.
Training with Kahla
I spent a few hours training with @Kahla Delahay today! We were hanging out so of course we did some obedience too - a little clip of the heeling attached. Happy birthday @Jenna Owen! Shame you couldn't make it.

Nice 🔥
Focus Switching
I know a bunch of you have taught this focus switching e.g. from something away from you, and also back to focusing on your face. What's your favourite method? Any favourite tutorials/resources?

Aha that's a good one Nick, I prefer source focus, but handler focus is nice too. Best is to be able to switch between both, not easy, because lot of dogs will anticipate and look at you when the need to stay focussed on the source they want. I'm curious what other people will answer 😜

@Katia Jewitt check the video, dog focusses on the thing he/she wants, without losing focus. Can be food or can be a toy.
Training chain
Let’s start a training chain. How it works is that we take turns sharing an exercise or training challenge with the group. Everyone can give it a go at home and share their videos or daily training posts. We then tag the next person to share the next exercise. You can either film it, type it up or share any way you feel comfortable. Just have it ready to post by Sunday 😊

@Ave Paasuke love the exercise 🤩
Focus on the Source 🔥
Vix does everything for a “boulet” 😀 Note to myself: Reward faster, I took it too long, during my last “sit” command, she lost her focus, my bad, took it too long. Self analysis, always learning and analysing. For me, this is the most important in the learning process, to notice mistakes and learn from them 💪
