Van gogh museum
Yesterday I went to the Van Gogh museum, which is next to the Rijksmuseum I visited recently with my son. I had not been there in a while and really enjoyed it. They have the largest collection of Vincent’s works in the world, so you can get a good insight into his life and artistic development. I had never noticed the thumbnail of the potato eaters before, and also did not know a lot of his works are painted on cardboard… Fell in love with (pre)Impressionism a little more. The beauty in real of imaginary objects, their relations and the way colour makes them sing. Perfectly imperfect. Saw some work of an awesome impressionist painter I did not yet know, Emile Schuffenecker. Had to giggle a bit about Vincent’s academic drawings (he was taught at an academy for a short period of time), wondering if the female nude model he drew really looked like a hobbit 🫢 Looked in awe at the way colour works in his cabbages and garlic and the way it is nearly abstract. Love it. Had never seen the Gauguin painting of Vincent painting the sunflowers before. Apparently Vincent saw the brilliant potential in that painting and it nearly broke him trying to finish it. It was a wonderful day! Also highly recommended for a visit.

@Darren Lockhart Hi Darren, You were also lucky then! You should definitely visit when in Amsterdam, there are around 200 of his paintings. Also a lot of his drawings, although those are on rotation because of their vulnerability. You are right: there is also a painting of his bedroom in Arles in Amsterdam. Great to see up close, paint is extremely thick in places. Lovely portrait.

@Chris Legaspi Wahaha, to each his own Chris.

I chose this guy because I love the color and really wanted to indulge in the complements of orange and blue. For the blue I used a wild color called Carribean Blue from Old Holland.

Congrats Dima 🥳
Conté Portrait on Toned Paper
I tried a watercolor wash as the base for this drawing. It seemed to give good tooth and allow for some great layering opportunities. Approx 18x22”

Great portrait, Trevor! Her face is very convincing. Reads very well as a thumbnail too. The connection of the neck to the torso could be a bit clearer I think.
