A Little Collaborative Fun
@Timothy Colomba I hope this is alright... I thought it would be fun to engage in one of those "write the next line" threads. I'll go first: The old man's bushy white eyebrows rose above his blue eyes like two clouds floating by on a summer afternoon. He leaned forward until I could see the pores on his bulbous nose and wrinkled cheeks. "Sonny," he said to me in his southern drawl, "they sell everything from pens to popcorn machines, but if you can't handle a little supernatural shock and awe every now and then I'd stay far far away from that store." ...

He only met my stare for a moment longer before closing his eyes and resuming the gentle rhythm of his rocking chair. I studied the door and the uneven lettering on the sign. What you need is here. Despite the old man’s warning, I reached for the handle and stepped through, flinching as the bright, unnatural chime echoed behind me.

I am working on a fantasy. I’m passionate about keeping my Christian values in it, it’s been a lot of fun world-building. I’d have to say I enjoy that the most.
What's your real job?
And before you say it, allow me — your real job is that you’re a writer. Can we all agree? But… you know what I’m asking. Even famous, best-selling authors once worked other jobs. I’ll start. I’m a freelance commercial videographer and photographer. I’ve had my own business for over 15 years, and most of my clients are in life science or technology. Like how writing is always on your mind, owning your own business makes it so you can’t really clock out; but I’m grateful for the freedoms it allows me. Your turn.

I work in the billing office of a hospital processing insurance payments. I actually enjoy my work, an added perk I’m able to work from home.
How do you write?
No judgement, we’ve all got our systems I’m sure. What’s your word processor of choice?

I use mainly use Google Docs, but I frequently text myself ideas when I’m away from my laptop. I do a lot of handwritten notes as well. Basically, I’m all over the place! I’m curious about scrivener, I’ve looked into it before but I wasn’t certain if it was right for me. I’d love to hear how it’s working for anyone who is using it. A method I am considering trying, once I’m settled in—I’m currently in the process of moving—is using index cards to track “threads/scenes” on a cork board. Building a timeline of major plot points, threads, callbacks, foreshadowing and such. This could allow me to easily move scenes in an outline to another place if needed. See, all over the place!!
