Spam comments -- keep or delete?
I've got a new short that has attracted some spammers -- touting an app or something. Nothing obscene. I know sometimes content creators deliberately "hate post," featuring subjects that get people to comment, which is apparently all some platforms cares about: engagement is "good," even if everyone who comments hates you. Although that may be more true of Tiktok than YT. I almost never look at Tktk. So my question is: should I bother to delete the comments? In that little "great job!" response you always get in YT Studio, YT was all excited about my getting more comments than usual. lol! Either way, I'll block them so they can't post again.
My first "viral!"
Hey all. I wanted to announce a small win: I have an art channel, so I do a lot of shorts, which have mostly been in the 500 view range since I started the channel in... October, I think it was. (Well, after that inevitable start of a handful of shorts gaining only a handful of views.) A few weeks ago, one of them popped up to 750, so my next goal was 1000 views. Thursday afternoon's short has blown thru that goal: Well over 13,000 views now, and continuing to rise, although slowing a bit from yesterday. not millions the way the big channels get, but a nice surpassed goal for l'il ol' me. I know shorts are considered by some to be a sort of "lesser" form of viewing compared to long-form; and likely it's true that most shorts subscribers won't be interested in the long-form that eventually leads to enough watch hours for monetization. But just this one short has gained me nearly 20 subscribers in one day, which is a good percentage jump over the low 60s I had before that. A nice boost towards my next goal of surpassing 100 subs. A few tips for those doing demo shorts of any sort, whether art or otherwise: -- I've found my shorts (and long-form, for that matter) always get more views if my hands are in view in the thumbnail. This particular one, I think -- and it was just dumb luck -- has a moment of suspense because in that 3 to 5 second preview sample that plays in the feed, I'm seen picking up a card that I have just smooshed into thick paint on a gel plate, but the sample cuts off before I turn the card all the way over to show the result. So I'm going to try to aim for that little tantalizing semi-reveal from now on, although I don't think I'll always be able to manufacture it. I don't spend ALL my time smashing things face down onto a gel plate. lol! Anyway, cheers, everybody. Thanks to Alexa for this lovely community!

@Rose Salazar oh gosh sorry, I just discovered your comment. Crazy to think that a bit over three weeks ago I had only low 60s in subs after a good 6 or 8 weeks of work. Now in half that time,, I’ve nearly doubled my subs. I do have fun figuring out what works.

@Kasia Rutkowiak Thank you! 😊
Shorts from longer videos?
After building a few skills with shorts, I'm proud to say I FINALLY got up my first long video -- about 38 minutes long, edited down from a 90 minute art session. (Thank you, dear Rona for stopping by!) I see some members post shorts from longer vids with a link back to the original. Figured I'd do that with this first long vid, but just curious: for those who have done this, do you see it driving much traffic to your longer videos? Since my views are still SUPER modest, I don't see it changing things much yet, but for those with more subscribers, is it effective?

@Marvin Schwartz and @Wendy Dashwood-Quick Thanks guys! I appreciate your kind words. Of course, that photo was taken from an insanely high, flattering angle and is a couple of years (and, ahem, POUNDS ago.) You'll both get a kick out of this story: I've been a children's book writer for 20 years, and -- cross my heart -- I don't keep ancient photos on my website, but you can never tell when/where a school will grab a photo off Google to quickly throw together a flier about my coming author visit. Last year, I was impressed to learn that a few weeks before my visit, a group of middle schoolers put together a little program and presented it to the local school board. But I was dismayed to see they had somehow found a photo that was LITERALLY my very first author photo taken by my 12-year-old son. He's 31 now! I had visions of stepping onto the stage and hearing 300 whispers of, "Who is THAT?" Ha! During Q&A, I once had a child raise her hand and and ask, "Was that photo taken a looooong time ago?" Hahahaha! In fact, it was recent but it had employed that high angle trick, while she and her school mates are seated on the floor, looking up at all of my chins. 🤣

@Wendy Dashwood-Quick so he doesn’t get too big a head, I’m glad another child gave hubby HIS humble moment. My husband is slimmer than me, a handsome guy with a full head of pure white hair. ( At least I’ve still got my original hair color if not my original waistline! 😆) My screen saver was a pic of hubby I had taken when he accompanied me to a school visit in San Francisco a few years before. At this later school, that image popped up before I opened PowerPoint. A little boy seated in the assembly piped up: “Who that old man?” 😜

As children's book author & now parental caregiver, I'm returning to art for my mental health. I think others in this situation would benefit, too.
