It means to play that specific bass on row 1, nearest row against the bellow. Also known as the "Counter-bass row" or "3rds row". And if there is a tenuto or portato marking, then that will be above the fingering and under the note.

This took me about 3 months to learn and get up to speed. There are contextual factors which effect my ability; I cannot play this as well as I did here (this recording is from may, I haven’t practiced the song for about a month), and that itself is a mental challenge I face in playing. Other than practice, I cite my lack of repertoire as a reason for not being able to play as well, but I am confident that in a year or two, I will be able to play this without difficulty :)
