6 contributions to Rocks Rock!
2.5 - Little Chunk of Quartz
Quartz (SiO2 or silica dioxide) is the most ubiquitous minerals on the planet. It’s a simple compound that has thousands of practical uses for humans. I could go on forever. You should really watch this video if you’re interested: https://youtu.be/A41wVJaYnRU?si=T8JkEUrFcDD8RXVm Anyway, I like mundane rocks. Sometimes the most beautiful interesting rocks are just hanging out in planters beds in a strip mall. It’s amazing how many people pass over what I interpret as pure miracles of millions of years of geologic activity. This little guy was probably just on the sidewalk or something. I don’t remember where. But I found broken like this. When did it break? A year ago? 5? 100? Who knows!

2.3 - Labradorite
Hey Rockheads! Been awhile. My bad I’ve had a lot going on. Anyway- this is one of my favorite rocks I own for a whole bunch of reasons. Most importantly though, is it’s incredible iridescence. Iridescence is what Labradorite is famous for. These rocks look like boring old black or dark blue chunks. Then, hold them up to the light and BAM! INCREDIBLE SHINY 3D IRIDESCENCE. I got this at a flea market in Woodstock, NY in 2019. It was a wedding gift from my dad. I’ll cherish it forever.

Guys, Holy moly this is cool. I just found this amazing website thats a geological map of the ENTIRE WORLD How insane is that?? Just like Google Earth, you can now zoom in to anywhere on the planet and get a sense of what the bedrock is! 🤯 So check out the link! Whats YOUR geology?? Mine is gneiss, marble, schist, quartzite, even a little SERPENTINITE?? I'm in NYC 🤗

Rocks vs Stones
Believe it or not there is a subtle, yet important difference between the terms ‘Rock’ and ‘Stone’. Though using them interchangeably is not some big faux pas, it is interesting to note they are definitionally different. ROCK - a rock is usual replete with its natural jagged edges and mass. Rocks vary in size dramatically - from the palm of your hand to mountain sized boulders. A single continuous mass of minerals and mineraloids make up rocks. A rock is typically what we find on a hiking trail. STONE - a stone is defined differently mostly by its shape, smoothness, and size. A stone is typically weathered by nature or human intervention till the surface has lost all protruding features. Stones can be large, but typically aren’t recognized as such when they are larger than human scale. A stone is typically what we find on the shore of a lake. Stones are used in the context of construction or decoration. From geology.in : “The key thing to note is that geologists use "rock" as a broader term to describe large masses of material that make up the Earth's crust, including mountains, plateaus, and cliffs.” Pretty cool right?
