Pup-date And Feeling Frazzled
Hope you’re doing okay in the heat. I sent an email this week with a few coping tips on there, nutrition and sleep support mostly, so hope it landed in your inbox. We’ve had an added layer of complication this week in that we’re fostering a six week old puppy. Of course, she’s adorable, but we’re also staying super sensible about this and know we can’t commit to anything until we see that it’s right for everyone. One thing we’ve definitely had to commit to is regulating our nervous systems in different ways. This little pup needs periods of stimulation and play, and periods of decompression, basically the doggy equivalent of a yoga nidra. I’ve already noticed she’s forcing me to be more productive in the time I work, so that I can properly rest in the time I’m not. I’ve been drawn to Tara Brach’s meditations a bit more this week, we all need to stay connected to our felt sense, our gut feeling, and be led by that rather than overthinking it. I’ve been doing her somatic practices to stay connected, because my mind is mostly going WTAF. I’d love to hear how you’re getting on in this heat, and how you’re doing with your own boundaries. Boundaries can be tougher to hold at the moment too, there’s often more happening in summer, more social connection and engagement taking place, and the heat just adds another layer of intensity to all of that. The longer days, and extra light can also be overstimulating in themselves. We don’t get that same natural pull to head home and settle into proper downtime the way we do in winter. Interestingly, people in countries with the longest days often say they crave winter, and I never really understood that until now. I feel desperate for autumn and winter to arrive. I am so over the heat and sweating all day long. It’s been too long here without any change in temperature or to have any sort of “weather”. August has been so disappointing for me. All of my friends are out of town, my normal events are on hiatus for the summer, and all the fun stuff concluded in July. I originally looked forward to this last month of summer holidays as a time to have lazy days and be out exploring with my kids. They haven’t wanted to leave the house though and so neither have I. It’s been super hard and depressing - all of it. Plus I have some internal heat that seems to make the weather feel worse. It doesn’t seem to be affecting anyone in the house as badly as it does for me. I try and manage sleep with a fan and ice packs but it is not ideal. As a result I am irritable, lonely, struggling with digestive issues, etc. I find myself looking at the weather in the arctic circle and dreaming of jumpers and snow. I am meditating and nidra-ing like my life depended on it. Journaling as well. Blar.

Ruby Wax Interview ...
Really enjoyed this and super fascinating chat, sharing as you may enjoy. It's deep, insightful but has many laugh out loud moments too. Really struck me how much Ruby not only had poor attachments and early life trauma but is carrying so many difficult generational experiences and from a Mindbody perspective could be manifesting as a deep depression. I've been debating a silent retreat too but not sure I could do a month 😮 https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/begin-again-with-davina-mccall/id1773104705?i=1000758784567

A month is a long time. I feel like I go a little bonkers in the days where I don’t interact with anyone. I really enjoy talking and connecting with other humans. It would be hard for me.
Just wiped out
It is an odd feeling to have nowhere near the amount of energy required to make it through a ‘normal’ day. I struggled big time yesterday and it now feels like the last couple of weeks have the same sort of flavour as when I discovered an under active thyroid and at the start of perimenopause. Where no amount of time in bed will be enough and the tiredness, headaches, low mood and body aches makes it feel like I’m dragging around a ball and chain. So I’m taking today off, and maybe tomorrow. We will see. But my ego is already suggesting that this would be an excellent opportunity to look at new mortgage options and sort out some business admin if all I'm doing is lying on the sofa 🙈 Also, I had 3 crazy dreams last night, all contributing to a restless night. One was about how Covid was being spread through spiders 🕷️ And we were all trying to avoid them, they were everywhere, and a colleague didn’t help me when I had managed to zap one (with an actual taser), she stood back and watched while I struggled to tackle this 3 cm beast 🤷🏼‍♀️ Another was really hazy and something to do with lots of people not being respectful and honest. The last was also hazy but was about the charity event I stepped down from earlier this year and I was sneaking away from one of the evenings through others’ back gardens and got caught climbing out of someone’s window. But then they started chatting to me🤔 I think I need a holiday 🤪

Spider dreams, scary. I have them once in awhile, total nightmare for me. 😳 I relate to your feelings of fatigue because I have felt that way before. No thyroid issue here, I think for me it’s always stress and sleep (lack of) related. I went for a hike recently with my son and I was on this hilltop and it was a hot day. The wind on the hill was glorious. All you could see was beautiful landscape and hear the wind and the birds. It was so peaceful. I thought I could just stay in this place forever. It was like a mini break. I think we need more time for things like this to feel free of our to do lists, and to feel present.

@Shona Cherry I completely get that. Every time I am out walking I say “I could do this every single day.” I would love a continuous hike one day, just for the experience of it.
