Dumpster guitar
So a few years back I saved this old Seville acoustic from the dumpster. I have always been a person that loves a project. I am 100% sure this guitar is not worth the time or money I am putting into it but with me being a luthier I dont care I am determined to make this thing sing.

FENDER IS MAKING WAVES...
Have you heard? This is some serious shit! Fender is issuing cease and desists to builders of Strat-inspired electric guitars in an effort to protect the Stratocaster body style trademark. Reactions are mixed. On one hand, the move has been widely panned; on the other, people argue that, as the original designers of the S-type guitar, they have the right to do so. But it's not so simple. It all started a few weeks ago when "a Regional Court of Dusseldorf established a legal precedent in Germany and gave Fender the legal right to 'protect its designs in global commerce.'" Now, Fender is sending out cease and desist letters to companies demanding that they halt production immediately. Not only that, they demand the recall "of existing products, and destruction of the guitars that Fender claims infringe on its copyright." This is one of the most significant fallouts and legal challenges the guitar industry has encountered in many years. At least initially, Fender is targeting small companies, such as "LsL Instruments – a family-run firm based in the US that makes boutique S-style guitars." My take is that they are going after the little people, who they hope will not have the ability to file what could be a long and expensive court battle. Some companies have gone to great lengths to alter their designs to make them similar to, but not exact copies of the Stratocaster, altering the headstock so that it doesn't infringe upon the Fender design, configuring them with pickup configurations other the SSS, such as HH, HSH, HSS, and single pickups, sharpening the horns (most notably Ibanez), or changing the depth of the cutaways. Curiously, Fender is doing this even though the company embarked on a similar campaign in the US back in 2009, in an attempt to trademark the Stratocaster. That effort failed as the body shape was "deemed generic."

@William Gentry OK that makes sense but there has got to be some kind of separation in markets. The court ruling is in EU no one in the US should have to abide by a ruling made on a completely different continent is all im saying. There has to be more to this than what people are writing and telling.

@Peter Torres yes you are correct. But they can still over the years protect their intellectual property in many different ways. They did not. The first thing they did was let after market parts and pieces be made of their "brand" by 3rd party OEM manufacturers. They have, basically, continuously whored out their designs to make small profits here and there. Instead of protecting what is theirs. Now that people are taking it and making it better and product isnt flying off the shelves, they have to assert one of the big two dominace. They dont have a case.
Being a luthier.
I dont typically post a lot but as I go through school for lutherie, I have definitely learned a few things about guitar players. We all think we know everything about guitars (at least I felt like I knew most of it). We do not🤣 the more I repair instruments that people have attempted to repair before me, the more I have come to the conclusion that guitar players can tinker themselves into a hell of an expensive bill. My intent is not to ruffle feathers but to mearly point out the fact that as guitar players the quest for more knowledge and the need to customize things can really get us into trouble. Has anyone else had this with their own instruments?

Kit Bass
My son (15), has taken up playing the bass this year. He has excelled so quickly that he is now in a really good band. I’m very proud. For his birthday, I want to give him a bass I built. My question for everyone here is, have you ever built a kit bass? I bought a kit and have decided to upgrade the pickups to Seymour Duncan SPB-3 quarter pounders, Gotoh tuners, a Gotoh bridge and Seymour Duncan pots. I will line the electronics with copper tape also. I will be finishing it in heavy metallic flake purple (similar to the purple on old Road Runner cars called Plum Crazy). I want this to be a great bass for him. What am I missing or not considering? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer!

Check the nut. I have a few friends that have built kits and the nuts were either not filed correctly or they cracked easily. It also may have been user error but none the less something to put an eye on.
