I'll echo Stephen's comment: Good historical fiction can bring any era to life. What I find 'slightly' distressing is that historical fiction is now creeping into the 1960s, when I was born. Way to age a person ...πlol. My all-time favourite historical fiction novel would have to be Shadow of the Wind, by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. But you'd have to be into Gothic mystery for that to appeal. The Lady in White by Wilkie Collins is a close second, but also Gothic mystery. Hmmm, I sense a pattern here.
