How I'm learning/remembering tunes I semi-know
Here I'm listening to the tune and the harmony. Playing the simple melody and double stopping bits of the chords. Its how I power through learning things if I dont have much time (always nowadays). It only really works if I already know it am just trying to get the little bits I missed last time I played it. This is "Lentement Mademoiselle" by Django, the name being a good fit for this post... Slowly chipping away at things over time, forgetting it and coming back later. Its the way I find I learn things the best.

I usually remember the first phrase or launch of any section but really have to memorize how it resolves
What you working on this weekend?
Drop a comment telling me what you are up to! I’m doing a little brushing up of some difficult melodies for a gig playing Djangos later music at Pizza Express Jazz Club coming up tomorrow Ever tried this one?

I've decided this weekend I'm going to practice doing the cool Stuff Smith "swell" on notes INSTEAD of vibrato. Any note, any finger!! I am so discouraged with my tight fast vibrato that I've sworn off it totally hoping to start fresh. So I knew I would need something so I don't sound dull without vibrato and then I heard a local pro Jon Vriesacker live last Thursday who has really mastered Stuff's note swell...WOW! who needs vibrato when you have that cool swell? I also think it has alot to do with emulating horns. I love Grappelli but I need to listen to Stuff for a while to capture his horn-like articulation.

@Matt Holborn very slight scoop up and then arching over or arching back down through the pitch to simulate the way a horn sounds.

Been really enjoying getting more into this tune, thanks @Kaia K for introducing me to it! (I find it really hard to post stuff without wanting to redo it over and over and fix things I don't like, especially when I make the mistake of setting up the camera at the least flattering angle, but gonna be brave and do it ha - feels like the sort of healthy pain that's probably good for you right, and watching myself back is so useful it's worth the discomfort) Got so so many things I want to work on and introduce into my playing, but sometimes good to just jam and see what's stuck so far

@Lotte Cutts Nice; I'm a big Eric Harland fan! Very understated!

@Lotte Cutts Curious how did you decide to do it in C instead of G?
Worst piece of music advice you’ve ever had?
Il go first… I used to hang out with jazz guitarists. A lot of them said that technique is just something that you work out yourself and shouldn’t worry about, just practise the changes and it will come… Maybe that works for electric guitarists but that’s not going to translate to good violin playing. Not exactly bad advice but more of a mistake on my part for not filtering it as a violinist.

"Don't worry about your fourth finger; its not that important, focus on your intonation on the first three fingers first.". Terrible advice.
