3-2 Press > Man Defense
Wondering if anyone has any tips on going from a 3-2 Zone Press dropping back to half court LL man. I've heard it said that it's easier to drop back to a half court Zone defense but we need to keep bodies on them. We're also planning on going full court man but some of our girls are too slow to do so.
Offense vs. a “Box & 1”
Do you all run anything special against a “Box & 1”? Or do you just continue to run the same triggers as you do against man? Our last two district opponents are going to go to it against our best guard.

Thank you. I understood it. I heard many years ago to use the 1 as a screen which will be actually 2 ppl screening with their defender attached to them. I’m thinking about trying that & also setting stagger or triple screens for her. Tonight, she only had 10 points & our other guards had 22, 11 & 8 but it was against a very weak opponent. We’re about to face our toughest two district opponents next week.
Team deflated. Need some insight.
Hello fellow coaches. Just a coach here who’s seeking some type of answers. Started off the year 5-0. 2nd leading scorer gets hurt and has missed the passed 7 games. We are now on a 5 game losing streak. Without bias, I can honestly say we have beat ourselves in each of every one of the losses. My best player, when the ball is out of his hands, no one can seem to produce or get a quality look. I’ve tried Rose series, and a couple other flowing sets with good spacing but offensively guys just stand there and have no sense of urgency on cuts, screens, etc.. Getting out rebounded every game off pure effort and lack of pursuit. Have tried different drills, different approaches, and me and and my staff cannot seem to light a spark under these guys. Our defensive intensity will look great at times and others hand down, dead silent, no real activity. It’s like something took the air right out of my team and we are beating ourself up trying to figure it out. Has anyone gone through this ? What has worked for you? Practice intensity we have to BEG them to give max effort.

I agree with both of these post. At 50 years young, I still get in there and compete whether it’s a shooting game or a scrimmage. Our HS girls really enjoy it because we’re just having fun in a competitive environment. I tend to join our less experienced teams to balance the competition. One of their favorite games is our 3 Team “UCLA” drill. I’m sure most of you all run it or something similar. Team A goes against Team B. If they score, they are allowed to press them up to half court. If not, Team B goes the other way to play against Team C who is waiting for them. We usually play man defense (focusing on Lock Left) but sometimes switch it up and run zones. You can play 3’s, 4’s or 5’s (if you want to work on your offense). I hope this helped. Don’t forget to keep score making it game like. Maybe, tell them you will reward the winning team with more play time. That might light a fire.
Eraser Role
We identify an eraser and we identify who we want to erase. The issue we keep running into is that the player we want to erase isn’t always being guarded by our eraser — often that matchup belongs to someone we want in a chase role. When we try to adjust it on the fly, it gets messy. Do you require your eraser to always be guarding the player they’re erasing, or have you had success doing it a different way? If different, how do you keep it clean and executable under pace?

@Tyler Coston We’re going to play a district opponent for the 2nd time who has two excellent rebounders. They each had 14 the 1st time we played. Do you suggest we try to get two erasers on them the whole game which means we would have to be in man or a junk defense = Triangle (up top) & 2 (on their post)?
How do you handle close game?
We recently had a scrimmage and the kids played well. There are definitely things we need to clean up. One area I had a question about is an end of game situation. (I know I need to practice this more.) However, I wanted to know how you all might handle this. If one of our principles of play is to Race first Race always, what do you do or how do you handle the final 2 or 3 minutes if you are up by only 2 possessions? In PA we still don’t have a shot clock. What would you all do? Thanks!

We run our “Spread” offense = 5 out (similar to 4 corners) with our guards. We only look for 9’s. Teams tend to foul us instead. From there, we just have to make our FT’s.
