I'm Josh. I've been tattooing since 2009, full time since 2013 in Christchurch New Zealand. I lean towards a lot of darker imagery, lots of textures and Gothic themes, suiting our local metal scene. I'm also very passionate about large scale Japanese inspired tattoos, for pretty much the opposite reason. Structure and tradition of the oriental versus dark chaos in the dead shit. Outside of the studio I am a husband, father to two sons and two dogs. I like to fluff about in my workshop making sculptures and wild contraptions.

Quick Question - Do you have an email list??? 📧
I've been collecting client emails for years now. I'm actually just about to hit my goal of 1000 contacts. Part of the marketing tips from mission 1 involves me collecting email addresses. Before I make the next step, I just wondered, do any of you currently have email lists? And would you like to know more about how I use mine?

This is something I'm going to take more seriously
Happy Monday! Life Update 🌿
I hope you guys are all having a great start to the week & also to the year so far! I've had a lot going on these past couple of weeks. After taking some time off over xmas, I thought it would be good to pack the bookings in for January. Not totally considering the fact I'm putting a lot of my energy towards this group right now. Also added to that I'm trying to take over a studio space in Whistler & finding most week days start with emails from the real estate agent & my lawyer that need attention. I'll be honest - I love my work so much, I have a tendency to not take much time off. I love feeling productive & appreciate all of the fun stuff I have going on. Well this morning overwhelm struck! I realized I had a day of drawing planned, more emails in my inbox & a head full of community ideas. I'm normally very good at keeping a clear head, but this morning it all felt too much. So I did this - I sent two important emails, then put my phone away. I closed the book with my drawing list & decided to reschedule the work. And I went for a walk. I took my wife for coffee, then offered to pick my kids up from school. I didn't realize how much I needed a day off. So the important lesson I have to sometimes remind myself is to find space. Space in the day, space in my week. Space just to absorb & process everything that's going on. We all need space to be creative & progress isn't just having your foot on the gas. One of my goals this year is to free up my schedule & find a better flow to all of the work I'm doing. What are your main goals going into 2026? ✨️

Good stuff Steve. Productivity isn't about going 100 percent all the time. It's better to move forward a bit slower than to crash completely. I'm glad you saw the warning signs.
Clients - A Quick Question… 🤔
We have so many things we can talk about here! We’ll look into the different aspects of our businesses in small chunks, leading to some quick actionable steps we can take to improve things. Social media & marketing are common issues to have on our minds. I’d love to start by asking a quick question- Where do you normally get your clients from. Are you getting clients from - - Walk-ins - Organic posts - Paid ads - Referrals? Then I’d love to share how one social media post brings me all of my new clients!

A lot of my clients are through word of mouth/referrals, 13 years in the one city helps a lot with that. Next would be Instagram organic reach and lately more and more walk ins. Not so much to do the tattoo straight away but to come in and talk about the tattoo idea and book at a later date.

@Steve Kretz It's a mix currently. Pre-covid and immediately after the lockdown there was a boom in my dark stuff and Japanese style, like body suits and sleeves, all the fun stuff. Now it's a bit more sporadic as to the style. There's a lot less full day continuing pieces and a lot more smaller pieces. Possibly a stylistic thing for the newer generation of clients. Possibly a financial thing due to economic climate. Probably both plus more factors to be honest.
