Making a new video on how to record acoustic guitar. Have you ever recorded yourself using a simple home recording setup before?

Nice! I have the same Focusrite audio interface. Tbh I use the showbox for recording nowadays because it's so much easier, although I only really record for video now. But if I really wanted to put time into recording acoustic sessions I'd use an XY or a spaced pair mic technique - Christian you'll probably be onto what that is but for those who aren't, XY is where you use two directional (ideally cardioid) mics in an X shape (90 degree angle) as close to each other as possible (see image). Then you'd pan those recordings left and right. This gives you a stereo recording that's pretty realistic. Also, because the microphone diaphragms are so close to each other, they're reading a very similar signal so you get less phase issues than using something like spaced pair. Also means that you don't have problems if the stereo signal is bounced down to a mono signal. I also like having one room mic somewhere (depending on the room), and often go with an "over the shoulder" mic, aimed at the body of the guitar. That's always a good start as far as mics. And mixing in the DI out of the guitar helps too. A lot of fun messing around with that stuff! I did audio engineering in uni and it was amazing because it meant we got to play with equipment I would never be able to afford! 😂

@Christian Lie I need a new pickup in my guitar for sure. My black Ibanez acoustic is pretty cheap but it's ideal for busking, super light. But it's really quacky with a piezo pickup. I've not changed a pickup before though, any tips?

LONG POST WARNING - For the quick version, watch the video at the end 👇 Over the last few weeks, our group has been climbing the music charts here on Skool! And that's because you're active and engage here in the group. The higher we go, the more people find us — which means more awesome members and chances to connect and learn together. I just want to thank you for being here and engaging. It means a lot! But to be clear, i don't think our goal is to build the biggest guitar community out there. It’s to build one based on three strong values: Magic. Connection. Structure. ✨ Magic When I was 12, I played my first show in a run-down school cafeteria. There were only four people there. I was nervous, my hands were sweaty, and I barely knew what I was doing. But the moment I started playing, something clicked — and I knew I’d play guitar for the rest of my life. If we can create similar magical moments here in this group, that’s something truly worth aiming for. 🤝 Connection A week or two ago, I was at a cabin with one of my best friends, Mikael. We started our first band together years ago and still play to this day. At the cabin, I showed him a riff I’d been stuck on. He just said, “How about a B chord?” And suddenly, it sounded amazing. Sometimes all it takes is connecting with the right person to unlock something new. Let’s make this group a place where those kinds of connections happen all the time. 🧭 Structure A lot of guitarists want to learn but don’t have a clear structure. Even many teachers struggle to give that. This group is, first and foremost, like a cocktail party for guitar players — magic and connection come first. But if you ever want to take things to the next level and learn with more structure, you know where to find me. By the way, the structure for learning should be so easy to follow it's fun. Besides these values, i think it will be exciting to grow this community together. To do that, all we have to do is be active. Like, comment and don't be afraid to start conversations. What you do matters to me and all the other members :) Let's rock!

👋 Heyo! Here’s a creative lick challenge for the weekend. Step 1: Watch the video below. Step 2: Learn ONE of the 3 riff variations - the easy, medium or hard one. Step 3: Make up your own ending for it, record and share it under this post! ❕Skip to 2:19 for the easy difficulty riff. ❗Skip to 4:10 for the medium difficulty riff. ‼️ Skip to 6:44 for the hard difficulty riff. ✨ I'm excited to see what you'll come up with this time!

Thanks for this Christian. I’m going to commit to these because I think it’s a great idea. I’m in Madrid next week so might miss that one though. I had a little 10 min break in work so threw this out. But it’s very resolute and a perfect cadence so it sounds more like the end of a jingle or a sitcom theme tune than a real rock song riff

@Nikola Gugoski I love the djent style dissonant chords with the minor 2nds, lovely! I'm a huge Djent/prog metal guy, sounds great man!
Burnout, Books, and Breaks 🔥📗🥱
Do you have something you do to relax, like reading, writing, or walking? As you may know, I put a lot of energy into my 1-on-1 lessons and this community. I want to help people feel confident and creatively free when picking up the guitar. But it’s not always easy. This month I almost worked a bit too much. Luckily, I saw it coming and took some time off to read and rest. What's your favourite down-time activity?

@Christian Lie Well pre-cancer I was heavily into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA so my exercise was pretty intense to be fair, every single day. Technical training but then a fair bit of running, functional training and strength work. Can't grapple anymore because the surgeries on my neck have left me with nerve damage so I can't get strangled recreationally any more 😢 I'm a qualified personal trainer, not for work but I just became obsessed so decided to study up properly. But as far as nowadays, I run, I hit the heavy bag and I'll throw some weights around, nothing too heavy, just to keep a base level of strength. But again, the cancer stuff is a huge hinderance! Sometimes the nausea is just way too much so I have to be careful.

@Christian Lie Aye, all good though man, there's plenty I can do so we push on!
Tried a triad exercise from Christian
@Christian Lie gave me this cool triad exercise to do after I was asking about how I can open up the fretboard a bit more. I used to play way more guitar, and in metal bands etc so i felt a lot more fluid, but these days, after just playing basic chords I'd forgotten a fair bit. This exercise reminded me of the modes and how I used to use them to travel around the fretboard a bit more fluently. Give it a go! Cheers @Christian Lie

I haven't been able to recently! Had a procedure done on my back. First gig back this weekend though so that should be good!

@Christian Lie Ah I've been in lots of bands to be honest man, lots of originals stuff. I've only started doing covers in the last year. Before that I rarely played any music written by other people. I was in a pop-punk band, 3 piece harmonic rock band (sort of muse style), a couple of really heavy metal bands. And a few other projects along the way
