Answer to yesterday's question: Question: Which of the following feline vaccines is NOT considered a “core” vaccine for adult cats? Answer: Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) Additional info: “Core” vaccines are recommended for all animals of that species. “Noncore” vaccines are not recommended for every animal, but for those at risk for contracting specific diseases. Veterinarians determine which noncore vaccines an animal needs based on their lifestyle. The vaccine for feline leukemia (FeLV) is highly recommended for kittens, but is considered a noncore vaccine for adult cats. Feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR), feline calicivirus, and feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) are considered core vaccines for adult cats. These are typically administered as a combination vaccine, the FVRCP vaccine.

Answer to yesterday's question: Question: Which sweetening ingredient is toxic to dogs? Answer: Xylitol Additional info: Xylitol is a sweetener found in many sugar-free and low-sugar products, such as gum, candy, baked goods, peanut butter, and toothpaste. Xylitol can be listed under other names, including wood sugar, birch sugar, and birch bark extract. It’s highly toxic and potentially fatal if consumed. Even in small doses, it can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, and liver failure. Cats do not appear to be at risk from ingestion of xylitol.
