The Shift Work Struggle: Power Engineers and Working Holiday Shifts!
Power Engineers! As many of us know all too well, the nature of our work often requires us to work shifts that can fall on weekends, nights, and, yes, even holidays. While we take pride in keeping our facility running 24/7/365, working on holidays can be challenging, missing out on time with family and friends during special occasions. It got me thinking about which Canadian holiday is the least favourite among us to work. Each holiday comes with its own vibe and the kind of festivities we might miss out on. Feel free to share your experiences, any particular reasons why you chose the holiday you did, or how you make the best of working on these special days. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and stories!

Christmas Day for me. Try as my family might, having "christmas" on the 28th or 22nd because of shift work was fine the first year or two, but after 5 years of missing out in a row it got old.

I feel like this is a good forum for anyone in these organizations to reach out to PEs across the industry. Anyone around?

I can only speak about written exams as those were the ones I wrote for 2nd class, and now working on my 1st. Sometimes 3.5 weeks, sometimes 5, but seem to be averaging 4 now.
How Many Years Did It Take You To Complete All 20 Power Engineering Exams?
Hey Power Engineers, We all embark on our Power Engineering journey with a mix of excitement and determination, aiming to progress through the classes from 4th Class right up to 1st Class. This path is unique for each of us, filled with its own set of challenges, learning curves, and milestones. A significant part of this journey includes completing a series of 20 exams, which is no small feat! I'm curious about the time it took for each of us to navigate from passing our first 4th Class exam to passing the last exam for the 1st Class certification. This journey can vary widely among individuals, influenced by work commitments, opportunities available, personal life, and study habits. So, let's get a sense of the diverse timelines within our community. How long did it take you to complete all 20 Power Engineering exams? The clock starts ticking once you pass your first 4th Class exam and stops ticking once you pass your last 1st Class exam. Thanks @Arun Sharma for the idea!

I guess i'll probably be about 10 years when all is said and done. I think I passed my first one in Dec 2015? I moved and got hired where i'm at in the middle of writing 2nds and ended up taking a year off. I got my 2nd in summer 2019 and slipped into a shift engineer spot during early Covid times when one of the guys decided to retire early. Exams were difficult to schedule and I just kinda slacked off for a couple of years. Funny how life changes like that. But, looks like i'm halfway on the 1st Class at this point. Not gonna stop now lol

I feel like Wastewater Treatment is a really big plus for PEs and employers in Ontario. I've seen a fair number of positings over the years mention the WW OIT (entry level) as a bonus. That said as I look forward in my own career i'm probably favouring Energy Management of some sort. Millwright would be a pretty big asset for a lot of plants that perform maintenance in house.
