@Jimmy Hudson I just ran through the practice schedule. For theory I subbed in some note on the neck practice in an old program from many years ago. Sight reading was new to me. Last time I read was in grade 8 I think :). Used "Bark at the Moon" as I figure it is as good as any to get reacquainted with the staff. Any further exercises/suggestions to swap in and out are welcome too. I used 20 mins on and 10 off roughly. This ought to keep me busy for while lol. Thanks Jimmy & Sid!!!! Cheers.
Second Masterclass and Story posts
Thanks for the updates and stories Jimmy. Nice to hear you play live with Sid and Ragsdale. Tell Sid @Sid Woolfolk that the second masterclass was packed with wonderful information. Will take me weeks/months to explore. I especially liked the idea of using 3 types of pents for chord progressions. It allows us to recycle the sequences and patterns in new ways. Never thought of this before. It also opens up the adapted blues licks with the 2nps shapes. Brilliant. Thank you both for sharing this with us. Cheers.

Thanks for putting this together Jimmy. I love all things Shawn especially the stories of his kindness, spirit and passion for knowledge. I've been an avid transcriber and on and off player for 30+ years. I have a great love of music, science and people. Cheers.

@Jimmy Hudson Hey Jimmy. Absolutely! I have a shit version of this demo from either a friend or a cassette recording from long ago. Lovely to be able to hear the original. His playing and articulation are so clean on it. It reminds me of the "lanes Blitz" with the dim runs. I heard shawn was irritated that Varney included that on the album as it was just his warm up and he wasn't aware that he was being recorded. That was one of the many highlights for me on that album as it was the first time I had heard a person play that fast on an album. It brought a huge grin to my face when I was in my teens and all I could say was ridiculous lol. Thanks also for the stories re: the Atlanta gig. I can re-watch it now with fresh eyes. Context enriches the performance. Knowing the stories (and possibly Shawns' headspace) offers insight into the techniques/ideas he used at the gig. Thanks for this. Cheers.
Picking Exercise #1 - Hungarian Mi
https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/porrj7f9mqq4m0wwv8wei/Picking-Ex.-Hung.-Mi.mp3?rlkey=jwjmwnlwigunllrmm4mp7ge1t&st=toexjfdt&dl=0 Here's an excerpt from a collection of picking exercises I've been crafting lately. This one's based on the Hungarian Minor Scale, which sounds really cool, and takes place on the top three strings using a 3NPS layout. It's easy to memorize, but challenging to play well (for me, anyway), and gives big benefits for both picking and fretting hands. Hope you like it. Let me know if you would like to see it tabbed out -Thanks.

Thanks for taking the time Sid! You have no idea what those little nuggets do for us (position change using a double note) when we're trying to piece together what Shawn left us. Getting the notes are usually the easy part its getting a viable fingering or flowing easily executed pattern that is usually the harder part :). Thanks so much for including your hand written note above. I'm happy its easier than what I produced as the second variation although super cool was a bit of an odd ball vs the repeated 11 10 9 sequence. I like my fast stuff to be repeated as its easier and I'm getting older and lazier (artifacts also creep in when slowing things down to 25% or lower). Cheers. P.S. I hope you don't mind if I post a few more licks from the years that have been bothering me. Every one provides a blueprint for further discovery. Like the wonderful pedal point exercise you posted for West Coast lodge; you can take each lick from the master and break it down: Find the triads that are hidden within, then change, invert, approach, or use the contour to generate other improvised licks. Each seed grows into an entire tree if explored creatively enough.

@Jimmy Hudson Hey Jimmy. I use Powertab as I'm a bloody Dinosaur :), I never ported over but its on my list. Transcribe to mark the beats so I can score to within a 32 on anything with a propper pulse. I used to try and tweak the tracks to get rid of base or mids but now I use LALAAI to strip the track into stems then do the transcribe thing mentioned above. I used to mess with the bends so that when you play back the midi in powertab you should get pretty close to the album sound if I did it right. It was common back in the day to do 4-6 hours of transcribing. I have done a few albums and many many songs of the shrapnel artists 1000s of hours over the years. The fingerings are dodgy as my ear far outstrips my visualization; something I'm currently obsessing about. I have quite a bit of shawn but others have helped me on some of the work so I don't give them out. Anything in recent years is game though. I just saw your post of the Led Zepplin Rock and Roll so I'll try my hand on the fills and solo when I get a chance. Last thing I did last year from shawn was back in march as a gift for Joel Rivard who does some wonderful shawn lessons on youtube. (Black Market Live Alphreds Memphis 92, Wherever You Walk Live off Youtube somewhere) 6:22 Its only 10 hours of work and I have to get back to it. Shawn has been the most challenging due to the muddiness of the early mixes and his ridiculous speed. I spend most of my time banging out MacAlpine, and Howe as they are my other favs and come together faster. I haven't done much transcribing this year due to life getting in the way. But if there is something you guys would like to see done let me know I'm happy to give back. These are not meant to be sold they are gifts to the community and future generations. Cheers. P.S. Fingerings need to be done (one of the reasons I'm so excited to learn here) but I come back to them later. Tonnes of "Gold in them der hills" Everyone's ear is different and artifacts can creep in at lower tempos but I usually check things back at 50% before I commit it to the page. Hope you enjoy.
