Adapt to Thrive Evolution is not survival of the fittest, it is survival of the most adaptable which is why innovation is a key profit driver in business and success metric in education, sports and the military. Wolves adapt to thrive and so do we. It is the source of our success. Wolves and humans have the widest range of any communal land predator and can thrive in incredibly varied environments from the coast to the plains, forests and mountains and each pack and tribe has a unique skillset for hunting the specific prey in that region. There are even wolves in the coastal rainforest that hunt fish. The development and perpetuation of adaptability is the primary function of culture. Wolves were introduced back into Yellowstone to help balance the ecosystem of the valley that was overrun by grazing. The wolves they brought in did a tremendous job hunting the elk and pushing them back into the mountains where they naturally live but they ignored the bison that were a major part of the problem. Those initial wolves were elk hunters from Canada and that was their culture. The biologists then brought in a bison hunting pack and not only did they successfully hunt the bison but they taught the other packs how to do so as well. Adaptability is the mark of a thriving culture. It is connected to the tribe’s behavioral agility and collective ability to learn. At a team level, adaptability is intentional innovation toward a shared vision for the future and the shared missions or goals that get us there. Creating a culture of adaptability and innovation is a common team priority because it is the roadmap for relevance during changing times and the way we future proof our family and company. A few best practices to create adaptability. Firstly, innovation must be built on a foundation of trust and safety that enables us to endure adversity and setbacks. The unavoidable sacrifice on the altar of innovation is failure and if you and your team do not have the resiliency to withstand repeated failures you will not be able to adapt to thrive. Alignment and belonging first and always.
