A gig you will always remember and why?
One of the gigs I will always remember was actually a small jazz club in Paris with the amazing Sebastien Giniaux and Matheau Chatelain. Iv always been a fan of Sebs, ever since I first heard him play on YT and at Samois Festival. It was great to play with such a legend of that music in such a relaxed and chilled setting. People outside of music often expect that we are a little more aspirational with the size of gigs we want to play. As jazz musicians, it’s often the case that we are happiest in a small room with an audience that’s interested. It’s my happy place! How about you?

Love this! I have an amalgam of great gig memories: a few are improvising at a pub in Edinburgh, improvising at a pub in Dublin (hmm….theme 🤣) but most recently a jazz gig I didn’t know was a jazz gig that I just showed up to at a public library in Queens, NY. Matt, you mentioning the rapt audience- yes!! That was how this was too- they were so into it, speaking and sometimes hollering ! their appreciation and love for jazz. It was moving!! Plus the musicians and artists were exceptional, unique & varied, just super special- relaxed vibes- that it made my day, week, month, year! The whole experience got me (back) into jazz violin w/ a return to one of my longtime loves, Stéphane Grappelli.
Musical Bodies exhibit at the Met, NYC
Hey all! I’m new here- hi! 👋 1. On Monday I went to the gorgeous Met exhibit Musical Bodies. It was so cool! I thought some of y’all might like to see the Violino Harpo Forma Maxima (1874) by Austrian luthier Thomas Zach. “This extravagantly curved, larger than life experimental Violin was built to test a Bucharest prince’s unorthodox theories about acoustics. While the instrument’s sound production was originally deemed disappointing, its striking organic and anatomical design perfectly embodies the theme of the exhibit, which explores the historical relationship between musical instruments and the human form.” 2. I‘ve been lucky to see and try out a Strad or 2 before, but I never saw one with a fingerboard this short! 😜

Hello, Matt & Everyone! I'm happy to have found this community. I grew up in the USA / Minnesota, started Suzuki violin when I was 4, trained classically and when I moved to New York City many years ago played in a million bands, classical, rock, pop, jazz; worked with artists, poets, rappers, DJs, every kind of artist imaginable- it's been the best! Recently I played a jazz gig and enjoyed it so much that when I got home I bought a Grappelli "licks" book and have totally fallen in love with it. I'm excited to get more books and try new licks. For whatever reason this specific way of playing has led me back to memorizing pretty easily, with lots of repetition; I wasn't sure I could still memorize, but am super thrilled that I can! Improvisation is a real joy for me. I've bought many loop pedals over the years but recently found one that really works for me (Boss RC-202) and I'd like to try more looping with the fiddle too. I love communities like this as I am really inspired by others' experiences and shares. Good luck to all! See you out there!
