Why SO MANY abandoned homes & buildings in Portugal? (inc. radical ideas, fado & communism!)
A great conversation from this morning's show with @Veronica - Ondrejech and @Carl Hyde with some radical suggestions for a long-standing problem here in portugal. And especially poignant with a housing crisis in progress. What do you think the country and its people should do? The X that prompted the conversation here

Inheritance laws for sure. Imagine the large families and the ones who scattered to the four corners….all must be accounted for and included into the decision to sell. For many of them, the crumbling Quinta represents what is left of a fading childhood dream, for others they want to hold out for a better price. A lot of bitter squabbling and then nothing. As a potential buyer, I see nothing but problems. Deferred maintenance, outdated electrical, crumbling walls and mold, dry rot, overgrown shrubbery and invasive plants, trying to hire craftsmen who already have too much work so it could take years to wait, dealing with a family that thinks a home is more of a valuable asset than a liability and keeps coming back with a different offer….Forget about it, I’ll buy something new.

8 years today, since we drove across the border between Spain and Portugal in our campervan, and caught our first glimpse of our new home country. It was just after 7.30pm, and the sun was coming down but the smell of eucalyptus and pine was still heavy in the humid air. We left from Devon on the 15th September in our camper van, said goodbye to our lovely colleagues with whom we had worked and volunteered with for over 5 years, and got on the road. We took the Plymouth-Santander ferry to Spain and we stood on deck and watched the UK vanish from view. We came over as a family of 4 and 14 months later became a family of 5. Thanks Portugal for keeping us safe. What a wonderful place to raise a family. 💗 So much gratitude! 💗
