KINGSTON AREA OVERDOSE WARNING
Emergency visits climb in Hastings and Prince Edward counties, officials urge caution. Southeast Public Health is warning residents about a recent increase in drug-related events in Hastings and Prince Edward counties. The health unit says preliminary data from March 29 to April 5 shows a higher number of emergency department visits linked to substance use. Community partners report symptoms including low heart rate, low blood pressure and prolonged sedation lasting several hours, raising concerns about unpredictable drug supply. Officials are urging people not to use drugs alone, noting about 75 per cent of opioid poisoning deaths happen when no one is present to help. They also recommend avoiding mixing substances, starting with small amounts and carrying naloxone kits. The National Overdose Response Service also provides a 24-7 phone-based option. The National Overdose Response Service (NORS) is a virtual safe consumption site available for all Canadians, 24/7 * 365. Service is 100% confidential, anonymous and judgement free. The only priority is to keep people safe while they use drugs. NORS also offers a 6 week virtual 1:1 Peer Wellness program at no cost. Residents are encouraged to call 911 immediately if a drug poisoning is suspected.

What I love most about this community so far is how it brings addiction counsellors together who are all committed to continuing to learn, grow, and support one another. This work can be heavy, and having a community like this reminds us that we’re not doing it alone. Together we become stronger and better able to serve the people who need us most🫶🏼
