Spruce Day 3 highlights.
Today was the ā€œboringā€ but super important part of training you don’t want to skip. The Detox - Building duration on the Place Cot. His job is one thing. Stay on the Place Cot WHEN he has a CHOICE to get off. Reliable training gives the dog choices instead of management. This video with more tutorial will be added to his full case study in Classroom. Phase 2: Freedom to CHOOSE in a secure area while proofing commands and routine.

@Donna Frinks down is the command, that applies to floor, crate, place cot, car. Today he is simply learning ā€œstay on cotā€ before his given a verbal. The boring stuff

@Eileen Mahar it’s also a therapy spot. Helps the dog work THROUGH discomfort, until it expands the comfort zone, building coping skills and resilience
An open door = NEUTRAL / NOTHING
Some highlights from Spruce’s Documentary in Classroom. He now has 6 videos and it’s only day 2. Most are taught ā€œsit and waitā€ before going out a door. This often breaks down because the dog anxiously WANTS TO get out. Teach, an open door is no different than a picture on a wall. Means nothing until released. During training I’ll have several doors open (safely during training phase) where the dog can make a choice. Restrictions (leash) = management. Choices (freedom) = trained.

@Kiley Lanaro great question. Technically it doesn’t. The long line is to allow him to feel FREE without his movement restricted. The long line is tethered to the wall with plenty of room to CHOOSE to go out. All work is taught with long lead drag or off leash. He is free to choose, exhaust his options, experience leaving. With low level remote collar stim he learns, huh,, um, I don’t WANT to go out. In the real world, at home, dogs are free to roam. This work gives them freedom. Soon he’ll be on an off leash hike šŸ™ŒšŸ» Same will apply to recall (come to me)
Place is a LOCATION for a DOWN command
Training should be simple. Instead of Tons of commands, we have 3. Down, Heel, Come. A Place Cot is simply a ā€œrelaxation stationā€ built into the daily routine so it becomes second nature to SHUT off when on Place.
