Feels like the theory is over now! Exam in hand I walked over to our infra team and asked for our first f4 capacity today:) Gotta say, coming from no data background except some vis-skills and use cases, the breadth and depth of the exam did excite me. Lots to do & build, with some bigger, long term questions of whether to try and make this a career when I’m already in 30s. Big things! Thank you Will & this incredible community you’ve built. My other two MS exams have been a lonely solo endeavour but not this.
becoming 'that new guy' who uses extensive chatgpt to learn
Not sure if anyone can relate but here goes: I've started using chatgpt extensively to get up the learning curve on spark & python specifically (coming from a reasonable sql base). What started off has mere curiosity morphed into full blown multi-hour gpt sessions querying and re-querying code with heavy in-line formatting to help me understand what does what within a library or specific transformation. It's been great, but I've started to pick up a bit of scorn from the more 'traditional' data engineers in our business. I don't actually mind too much, but this category of assisted learning is quite incredible, and strange to think it didn't exist even 6-months ago. It makes me wonder about the future of this space given how fast things are moving 😅
Future job roles when Fabric has matured
Hi all. I'm keen to start a discussion about what future job roles would look like once Fabric has matured and more businesses start using it in earnest. I'm eager to hear other Fabricators thoughts and opinions on the types of roles they think will be more common place in the months and years ahead. Will roles like Data Engineers, Data Warehouse Developers and BI Engineers/Analysts start to merge into one...….maybe Analytics Engineers who cover the end to end data solution will be more prevalent. If there's anyone who works in recruitment in the data space in this community, what are your thoughts? I'm absolutely loving Fabric at the moment, I'm hoping it will continue to grow and improve in the coming months and years. But with that growth, is a change in the workplace inevitable? Love to hear your thoughts. 😃

My guess is it will lower the average pay for super high end data specialists. It’s been so interesting, starting in the vis-layer and working upstream. With a bit of chatgpt and a few business problems, suddenly people are coming to me as ‘the data guy’ 😵‍💫
Why does a warehouse exist when a lakehouse can do all & more?
Hey Will, I've recently completed a lot of the learning path for DP-600 & feel that MS push the concept of a lakehouse recurrently. My question to you - why do data warehouses still exist at all, if the lakehouse can fulfill the same tasks and more? Is it a cost thing? Transaction store thing? A lot of the content in this blog seemed pretty dated 😅 https://dwbi1.wordpress.com/2022/01/15/do-we-still-need-a-data-warehouse/
