Questions about dynamic measures and experience with dbt semantic layer
Hey everyone! My team is currently deploying a new DWH system for our client based on the ClickHouse DB. Although we are still undecided between the visualization tools—Superset with direct query or Power BI with import mode (these are the only two possible scenarios with ClickHouse anyway) - we have managed to determine the layers in our new data warehouse: staging with views, core with a star schema and data marts with wide tables. We are uncertain about the following: 1. Based on these layers, where should we place our dynamic measures, which could later be used in Superset (such as net sales, COGS, etc.)? 2. How can we leverage the dbt Semantic Layer (Metric Flow) and incorporate the same definitions of those measures (considering that we are working with dbt Core and this edition has limited functionalities regarding the semantic layer)? Can you recommend some resources, maybe some step-by-step tutorials? For example something like this: https://docs.getdbt.com/docs/build/sl-getting-started but focused on dbt Core. 3. In general, is Metric Flow limited to certain types of databases or not? If anybody has any experience or recommendations regarding the above questions, please let me know. Thanks :)

Hi again, I have two more questions if you don't mind :) Regarding the approach you've mentioned, if I understood correctly, this is applicable in cases where we are using a hybrid approach (a layer with low granularity facts (star schema) and further summation within the data marts and wide tables)? When employing that approach, but without Metric Flow, is it possible to somehow highlight specific measures in the documentation (data lineage) that would resemble the red nodes from the following picture? https://docs.getdbt.com/img/docs/dbt-cloud/semantic-layer/metrics_red_nodes.png Do you have any suggestions or hacks?

@Michael Kahan Ok, thank you :)
[Start Here] Welcome to The Modern Data Community!
Hello! Welcome to The Modern Data Community. The goal of this community is to help Data Engineers on small (or solo) teams confidently build modern architectures by simplifying key concepts, clarifying common strategies & learning from others. Pumped to have you here! ==================== HOW IT WORKS ==================== By joining, you get instant access to tons of free content (see Classroom). Dive right in. But even more can be unlocked by contributing to the Community, which I encourage you to do. It works like this: Contribute (post/comment) >> Get points (likes) >> Reach new levels >> Unlock content ==================== 6 SIMPLE GUIDELINES ==================== ❌ Do not post error messages looking for others to debug your code. That's why Stack Overflow and other tool-specific Slack channels exist. ❌ Do not use this community for self-promotion (unless Admin approved). We all know it when we see it. ❌ Do not create low-quality posts with poor grammar/spelling or that provide little (or no) value. These will be deleted. You can do better! ✅ Ask questions, share your experiences & overall be a good person. This not only helps everyone get better, but can help you unlock bonus content faster. Win-Win. ✅ Speaking of wins, share yours! Whether it's finally solving a complex problem, hitting a team milestone or starting a new gig - post about it. You'll get the props you deserve and it just might inspire somebody else. ✅ Take the time to craft thoughtful posts & always proof-read before hitting submit. We're all about quality here. High quality posts --> more engagement (aka you'll climb the leaderboard & unlock content) --> ensures the community stays enjoyable for everyone. ==================== QUICK LINKS ==================== Here are a few links to help you get going: - Classroom - What's Your Data Stack? - Leaderboard - Work with me (Kahan Data Solutions)

Hello everyone! I'm Ivana and I currently work as a data engineer in a small IT company. So far I've only worked with traditional tools but soon we'll start working for a new client building a data warehouse from scratch using a modern data stack. I'm looking forward to learning new things and helping out if I can in this community.
