Book Banning in Self Publishing
The Indie Book Review just banned my book because it has an AI-generated cover art. Their policy is that any use of generative AI is "unethical" because it hurts the employment of writers, artists and translators. Thus they ban books that make "any use of generative AI". This luddite viewpoint overlooks the fact that any tool can make a talented writer, artist, or translator better and more productive. What's next, banning artwork that an artists creates using Photoshop instead of crayons? What about writers employing ghostwriters from countries with lower labor costs than in North America or Europe? They cite that both of these reduce employment opportunities for those who service this industry. My decision, as an emerging author with a shoestring budget to use AI to reduce cost for both my book cover and subsequent marketing is a creative decision to rely on my own creativity to guide generative AI, instead of hiring someone else's. Ethics does not extend to guaranteed employment of others. This confounds politics with ethics. Should not the reader be the sole decision maker of quality? Book banning based on the creative process, or many other reasons, is unethical.

@Stacy Arnold I completely agree with you. Transparency and authenticity are becoming increasingly important in publishing, especially as AI tools become more common. I believe AI can be a helpful tool, but the author’s creativity, unique voice, and personal touch are what make a book truly meaningful. Having a professional author website and genuine reader feedback can also go a long way toward building trust and establishing a stronger connection with readers. In your opinion, what do you think is the most effective way for indie authors to communicate their use of AI while maintaining readers’ trust?

@Blaze Martel I understand your point, and I think you’ve raised an important issue about how authors navigate transparency and the changing attitudes toward AI in the publishing industry. It must be frustrating to have your book excluded from reader newsletters simply because you disclosed that your cover was AI-generated, especially when the story itself deserves a chance to reach readers. I believe readers should have the opportunity to judge a book by its quality, while authors also need to consider the expectations and policies of the platforms they use. Hopefully, the industry will find a more balanced approach that encourages honesty without unfairly limiting authors’ opportunities. Do you think readers will eventually become more accepting of AI-assisted book covers as long as the story and overall quality meet their expectations?
One Week Published, 8 Sales Already! 📚
I’m excited to share a little milestone with everyone here! I published my book last week, and so far, I’ve made 8 sales! As a new author, seeing people take an interest in my work means so much to me. I know that getting a book published is one thing, but getting it in front of the right audience is another challenge entirely. I’m especially grateful to the person who supported and guided me along the way, helping me understand how to reach the right readers and give my book a better chance of being seen. Your help, advice, and encouragement have truly made a difference, and I sincerely appreciate it. 🙏❤️ This is only the beginning, and I’m looking forward to learning more, growing as an author, and reaching even more readers. To fellow authors in this community: How did you feel when you made your first few book sales, and what helped you get your book in front of the right audience? I’d love to hear your experiences! 💬

@A.v Blackmoor Absolutely, no problem at all! I completely understand how challenging it can be to get your book in front of the right readers, especially when you’re looking for genuine and honest reviews. I’d be happy to share what I’ve learned and what has worked for me so far. Sometimes connecting with other authors and sharing experiences can make the process a lot easier. What part are you finding the most difficult right now, finding the right readers, getting honest reviews, or reaching people who are genuinely interested in your genre?
