Book Banning in Self Publishing
The Indie Book Review just banned my book because it has an AI-generated cover art. Their policy is that any use of generative AI is "unethical" because it hurts the employment of writers, artists and translators. Thus they ban books that make "any use of generative AI". This luddite viewpoint overlooks the fact that any tool can make a talented writer, artist, or translator better and more productive. What's next, banning artwork that an artists creates using Photoshop instead of crayons? What about writers employing ghostwriters from countries with lower labor costs than in North America or Europe? They cite that both of these reduce employment opportunities for those who service this industry. My decision, as an emerging author with a shoestring budget to use AI to reduce cost for both my book cover and subsequent marketing is a creative decision to rely on my own creativity to guide generative AI, instead of hiring someone else's. Ethics does not extend to guaranteed employment of others. This confounds politics with ethics. Should not the reader be the sole decision maker of quality? Book banning based on the creative process, or many other reasons, is unethical.

@Hannah Janeth I think readers will always prefer a better story. I. The short term, however, transparency hurts authors. I have had my book banned from some reader newsletters because I disclosed that I had an AI-generated cover. Until book banning of AI use dies down in the Industry, this situation resembles a gay person trying to decide when to come out of the closet. If they think they will be persecuted for it, why be transparent?

@Hannah Janeth I think the vast majority of readers are already accepting of AI-generated or assisted book covers. The backlash is from the elitists in the publishing and editing community who see the tech as a threat and not as a tool.
What's stopping you from getting your books in front of more readers?
Many people aren't lacking ambition. They aren't sure which direction to take next. I've been in that position myself, and getting the right perspective made a big difference for me. If you're currently building something and have a challenge you're trying to solve, I'm happy to share what has worked for me where I can. What are you currently working on, and what's the biggest challenge you're facing?

I'm trying to get my arms around the various mechanisms available for increasing visibility (advertising external to Amazon, Amazon ads, newsletter mentions, awards, ...) and the cost-effectiveness of them for the stage that I'm at now. For example, if you win an award, a press release or newsletter ad is more effective than if you have not.
If you’re stuck, start by identifying the real problem.
Sometimes we say “I need more sales” when the real issue is that we're attracting the wrong people. Or we say “I need more traffic” when the real problem is conversion. Or we say “I need a better strategy” when what we really need is consistency. What problem are you currently trying to solve, and what do you think is causing it?

Figuring out who will read your book first requires divorcing yourself from why you wrote it. Unless you are writing formula-based stories, these are not the same at all in my experience. I write stories I want to write before I consider my audience. Others work in the reverse direction. No judgment, everyone's creative process is different. But don't confuse it with marketing it!

@Jessica Willow picking the right emotional hook. My recent book appeals to two audiences for different reasons. I can run separate marketing campaigns but have only 1 book description on Amazon. Tuning it to appeal to both audiences is tricky.
Editing with AI
What are your thoughts? I’ll go first. Spell check is AI. People have been using it in editing for decades. Now we have tools and software that can help us with flow, finding plot holes, and determining overused words. I’m here for it! As long as you are doing the writing and not using AI to write your story, I think it’s fine to have it help you read through and edit it.

@Adeline Carter I found Prowriting Aid to be the most useful until I hit a bug that is being fixed in their next release. It shows up only in larger manuscripts.

FYI, Prowriting Aid seems to have fixed their bug with long manuscripts
All writers & all genres welcome!
What genre is your current manuscript? Have you published before or will this be your first?

@Hannah Janeth I have two books published and available on Amazon. WHEN SILK & IRON LIE and its prequel are bestsellers in their category.
