"DON'T MOVE" There are moments in life when two words can separate everything that comes before from everything that comes after. "DON'T MOVE." I know those words because I heard them for real. My wife and I had spent the evening at a local bowling alley. We had been drinking, laughing, and talking with people we had just met. Like a lot of nights involving too much alcohol, I remember bits and pieces, but I couldn't tell you exactly what was said. The next morning, the conversations were gone. Alcohol has a way of stealing memories while leaving behind consequences. What we didn't know was that someone had been paying attention. They followed us nearly five miles back to our quiet little lake community. It was the kind of place where people worried about boat motors disappearing from docks or fishing equipment walking away—not violent crime. You felt safe there. At least we did. As we pulled into our driveway, everything changed in an instant. CRACK! The driver's side window exploded. Glass sprayed everywhere. The attackers had made one mistake. They thought I was driving. Instead, my wife was sitting behind that shattered window. Then I heard the words. "DON'T MOVE." That was probably the smartest advice anyone could have given me. Unfortunately, I was drunk. And when I drink, I don't always make smart decisions. I get stubborn. Hard-headed. Sometimes courage and stupidity wear the same face. Instead of freezing, I threw open the passenger door and stumbled toward them. I had no balance. No fighting skills. No plan. Just anger. They met me before I ever reached them. The baseball bat came down again... ...and again... ...and again. Across my head. My chest. My body. I remember my wife screaming. I remember the sound of the blows. I remember trying to get back up. Then headlights appeared as another vehicle rounded the corner into our neighborhood. The attackers ran. They left with nothing. No truck. No wallet. No victory. I took the beating.
