To app or not to app?
I’m seeing a lot of coaches building coaching apps right now. And I get it… Your clients having you in their corner matters. Accountability is crucial, as is your support. But I can’t shake this question… At what point does “support” quietly become dependency? If every decision you client makes runs through a coach, a prompt, or an app… Are you actually helping your client build themselves or are you conditioning them to outsource their judgment? There’s something uncomfortable here for me and I’m torn… I can’t help thinking that the more we normalize constant guidance, the less we help our clients stand on their own thinking. Coaching should be a bridge, not a crutch. The goal isn’t better answers from outside. It’s better questions from within. The consequence I grapple with is that we risk creating a generation of highly supported people who don’t trust themselves to move without permission. Curious how others think about this… Where’s the line between empowerment and dependency?

Most people asking, “Should I build an app?” are focused on support. “How can I be there more?” “How can I guide them better?” “How can I stay connected to the process?” But the real question is this: “Does this system increase their autonomy?” Because if your system only works when they’re inside of it… if they think better with it than without it… if they move only after checking in… then it’s not empowering them. It’s replacing them. Autonomy means they can think, decide, and move without needing constant input. So the standard isn’t more support. The standard is: less reliance over time. Autonomous Thinking is the ability to ask yourself better questions… without needing someone else to prompt you.

@Anouchka Hanneman I hear you—and I agree with a lot of what you’re saying, especially around personal responsibility and the role of honesty in reflection. I don’t think the app replaces that at all. I just think systems aren’t neutral either. They shape behavior over time—sometimes subtly. So while the user is responsible for their growth, the design still plays a role in what gets reinforced. That’s why I look at it through the lens of autonomy. Not whether support exists… but whether the system gradually reduces reliance on itself as the person develops. When that happens, responsibility and design are actually working together—not against each other.
Therapist calls me a fraud and a grifter. Here's my response…
Here's what happened: I have an ad running on Facebook, to promote our free Expert Coach certification and community. Yes, it's free... And yet some people still can't help getting triggered. Even though they’re therapists who should know better. Now... I don't always respond to trolls on Facebook... But this one was too good to ignore! Take a look: THERAPIST: Coaching is mostly BS. In my city, they're all coaching one another in a circle because nobody is buying it any more. ME: Because that's what you see, does it make it true? *** this really triggered our lovely therapist *** THERAPIST: OMG forty years of experience as a professional Change Agent, therapist, I know nothing. hahahahaha. Listen, you coaches, you really think you can change people by sitting them down, giving them advice and happy clappy claptrap. I've seen it over and over. How many clients do you think I've had down the decades who have spent a fortune with you charlatans and got nothing lasting from it? Dozens. You don't understand psychology, you don't understand process, you don't understand mental health, you don't understand the unconscious, you don't understand trauma, nothing. It's all, hey, you can be amazing if you just listen to me telling you how. Go away. You are all massive frauds. If you really want to 'help' people, man up, train to be an actual therapist. Coaching is literally 'made up.' You're all little arrogant mini gurus, it's a grift. And yes, it infuriates me. If your ad shows up on my timeline I'm going to tell you the truth. That's what actual therapists deal in you know. The Truth. ME: what did they teach in your therapist training about judgement? I've been coaching for nearly 30 years and I have played a part in thousands of transformations. But in your view I don't understand? And I'm a massive fraud? I'm a grifter? How many clients do you think I've had down the decades who have spent a fortune with therapists and got nothing lasting from it? Does that mean therapy doesn't work?

@Ed JC Smith I loved the way that you handled yourself in your response to the coaching critic. 👏 I also applaud you for differentiating between therapy and coaching... For me, two words come to mind purpose, and intent. I think that my purpose as a life purpose coach and authenticity coach is clear: to help people break free from mediocrity and the limitations of societal expectations so they can live authentically and thrive. Coaching is about empowering individuals to uncover their potential, align with their God-given purpose, and take meaningful action. It's not therapy, nor is it trying to be—it’s a distinct and valuable service for those ready to move forward. My intent is never to replace or diminish the work of therapists, whose roles in healing and mental health are invaluable. As a coach, my focus is forward-looking—helping clients clarify their vision, set achievable goals, and take the steps necessary to fulfill their potential. Coaching isn’t about pretending to be something it’s not; it’s about filling a unique role in a person’s journey toward growth and success.

I understand that coaching can be polarizing, especially for those with decades of experience in related fields. It’s easy to assume coaching is ineffective when bad actors exist in every profession. However, my intent isn’t to convince critics—it’s to serve those who need what coaching offers. And if even one life is changed because of my purpose-driven work, that’s enough for me.
