Quick introduction
Hello special people! This is a very briefly introduction. About Me I am a passionate environmental educator and FGASA nature guide from Durban, (KwaZulu Natal, South Africa). Qualified through paper and time. I have had the good fortune to have worked in many, many spectacular spots, with tens of thousands of people through either large NGOs, local ecotourism companies and diverse interest groups - facilitating outdoor learning for anyone, anywhere. From the grassy highlands of Mpumalanga, through our Bushveld, to the shores of the Indian Ocean, I hav 24 years of ecosystem studies, community projects, guide training and ecotourism experiences. Take care for now! Andre

Hi Andre! welcome to the group! it sounds like you've had a fascinating rich career path!! I've yet to visit Durban but Gareth is very keen to take me there, to the place he was born. Mpumalanga is also on our list!!! SA is such a beautiful country and we both can't wait to get back out there again for another visit!!
🐦 From London to Eastbourne: A Birder’s View of the Unexpected
When I moved from London to Eastbourne seven years ago, I didn’t expect to stay. I thought of it as a pause, a coastal breather before the next chapter. But Eastbourne has a way of quietly convincing you. It doesn’t shout. It hums. As a birder, I quickly learned that this town is more than its postcard pier and pensioner clichés. The lakes here are alive. Grey Herons stalk the shallows like old men in trench coats, while Goldcrests flit through hedgerows with the urgency of caffeine-fueled poets. If you know where to look, and I do, you’ll find almost every species that calls this corner of Sussex home. Beachy Head, with its white chalk cliffs, often gets mistaken for Dover. But it’s ours. And it’s wilder. The wind up there doesn’t just blow, it sculpts. And the birds ride it like they’ve read the manual. Then there’s the Cuckmere Valley, iconic in its own right, where the river meanders like a lazy signature and the birdlife is so abundant it feels curated. History here isn’t just in books. It’s in the soil. Hastings sits on the horizon, a reminder that the Norman conquest of 1066 happened just inland from where I walk most mornings. You can feel it if you listen long enough. The past doesn’t whisper here, it lingers. And yet, London is less than two hours away. Brighton, just thirty minutes. We’re close to the noise, but far enough to hear the birds. So here’s my invitation: tell us what makes your place sing. What do you see that others miss? What’s ordinary to you but might be exotic to someone else? Let’s celebrate the overlooked, the under-described, the real. The person behind the place.

We are very lucky living in this beautiful place! It was my mother who set the wheel in motion back in 1995 when she moved from Winchmore Hill, London to Eastbourne, with her late Husband. Shortly after, in 1998, i followed suit and left my Bedfordshire home to be nearer to my mother. 27 years later, Eastbourne is the charming town i now call "Home", the place where i finally settled and have raised two beautiful children, now 24 and 22. Not forgetting mr four paws of course, Benji sheltie, the other love of my life!!! he's 12! One of the things i love about Eastbourne is the proximity to some amazing Castles. Great places for walking Benji! Pevensey itself is such a charming little village with it's quaint timber frame buildings. The castle grounds themselves being free to meander. Another favourite is Herstmonceux Castle. I've seen deer there shrouded in mist which was magical! In Spring the gardens are alive with Tulips, in summer the woodlands, carpeted with Bluebells.
